The “Keswick” volume is out next month. I nearly pre-ordered it online yesterday, but will wait to see if I can support a local bookshop instead and pick one up when I’m there. I’m going to end up with two sets of Fellrangers, one in each layout (mountain groups, then valleys) to go with my four sets of Wainwrights. |

I also am going to end up with two sets of Fellrangers, however will make do with just two sets of Wainwrights Um - I almost forgot, thank you for posting the Wainwright scan. I had actually looked at it in some detail, the issue here is that as so often happens, Wainwright's version of summits and topography differs from other pundits. Take the summits of Graystones for instance - the Birkett and the WW are several hundred metres apart. |

NE - I assumed you'd seen the Wainwright, since you were quoting him. I guess he had less people checking or querying his work back then? But, as per DT, his is the first (that I know of) actual reference work, so tends to have first claim privileges. One question though - I seem to remember, on my first trip to the Lakes, in late 1970s, crawling up and under the chockstone at the bad step. Am I misremembering, or mis-locating a similar gully ? |

1. My original bought-in-the-1970s set, old enough to carry the "n'th impression" wording on the front pages. Very very worn and they've all got wet and been dried out many times. 2. A pristine never-used set published by the Westmorland Gazette which I bought just before they went to Michael Joseph in the belief they might become collectors' items. 3. The Frances Lincoln/Chris Jesty set with colour photos on the dustjackets (except, oddly, not for vols 1 and 2), which I never really used because I found the red-line additions to the ascent diagrams too indistinct. 4. The Clive Hutchby "Walker's" set, which I have started to take out with me and I think is actually a pretty good update. (Pleased to say I never contributed to the Michael Joseph coffers for any of them!) |

my "set" isn't - I have a three of the 70s ones that were dad's, I have a brand new "outlying fells" that the Wainwright society just republished, two of the "walker's " ones - which I like and will probably complete the set at some point and two of the FL/CJ ones. Apart from the new one, they were all from second hand shops. |
