I would absolutely love to go for a walk in the Strid Woods at Bolton Abbey. I could be there in half an hour from here and would be happy to go early in the morning. I’ve zero intention of going though

Every Tom Dick and Harriet has been parking outside my back garden and walking through the fields, some geared up for a whole day out on the "long" distance path, for the whole lockdown period. I get the Mountain Rescue argument, I do and I respect that we shouldn't do anything to put others at risk - but what makes the LD and The Peaks any different from any other area where people have been driving to and will, in greater numbers now, continue to do so, different? I Thought beaches were to remain "closed" for safety reasons - the lifeguards haven't been able to train, they are in the same close contact situation as mountain rescue - but beaches are open. I'm not arguing, I agree with the LDNP, we shouldn't be travelling unnecessarily and we shouldn't be doing anything that puts others at risk - but what makes Cumbria "special" to put out messages that they're still closed. Does this risk an alienation that will put off much-needed visitors in the future? I hope not. |

I thought the message on the LDNP website made the case pretty clear - they still have a very high infection rate compared to other parts of the country. We live an hour away from the south lakes and it is tempting - but we will stay away, and stick with exercise from home. I accept confusing messages really aren't helping.

With you AL - tempting though it is, we'll be staying away until we think it's safe and the local authorities (all of them) think it's safe We could be in South Lakes in about 80 mins, but why should we potentially add to the burden of an already over-stretched health service Haven't read the rules, but presumably if 'hospitality' won't be de-restricted until July at the earliest, then overnight stays are still restricted, even if they are self-catering |

R4R - correct - the rules are, at present, 'day trips only'. This is the same link FR posted yesterday - repeated so it doesn't get lost gov.uk Prompted by Rosehip's fair 'what makes us special' challenge, I've reflected further on this overnight. In many respects we're not - and it's also clear that there is no legal obstacle to people making day trips up here - but I think it is important that the NP authorities make potential visitors aware of particular local issues, including the fact that the majority of the infrastructure visitors would rely upon remains closed in accordance with national guidance/rules. Having drawn attention to those issues, it is then reasonable (I believe) to say please stay away for now. I am hopeful that the majority of potential visitors will apply the common sense now being called upon by ministers (and - yes - I know how uncommon that often seems to be) and respect the request being made of them. I doubt that those visitors will be put off for the future. |

I'm not disagreeing - just interested why we can't say "Locals only on these trails please" too. It was a stupid thing to say "no limit to how far you can drive" because it will always be stretched. On the other hand, where do you draw the line to allow city dwellers the chance for some proper fresh air without all being squashed into the same city parks? It does mean I could go to my original plan of "running" up and down Ivinghoe Beacon as hill training - but that will be rammed too, unless everyone goes back to work. |

I’m hoping to run/ walk in Longsleddale tomorrow.. mostly in the valley bottom. First visit for me ...does anyone have information if there is any parking in the valley? I’m wondering if it’s as limited as Kentmere? |

Parking in Longsleddale is pretty limited runnyeyes. There is room for a handful of vehicles at Sadgill where the road ends and there is also a small car park and toilets about 2 and a half miles further back by the village hall below Beech Hill (where the phone is marked on the OS map). Its also worth bearing in mind that the last 5 miles or so of road from Garnett Bridge is very much single track with no parking options. I would think tomorrow it will be very much a case of go early or it will be full.

The hills are going nowhere. They will still be there in millions of years time. I'm grateful for the opportunity to get outside locally and explore trails I've not explore, even though I've been local in the Fens all my life. However when tourists, like me, are allowed back it will taste even sweeter. |
