The great dollop
You do don't you ! - so here's one about entering races and things: sspimg.com Basically only half of us are turning up to events, and then almost a third of those are trying to just enter on the day. Races and race directors are going bust because of it, and it's not sustainable. Even the super-massive races are down to 52% of entry no shows (like the recent Cardiff half), or only half as many entries as usual (like Colchester Half). From the results so far - Lockdown seems to have almost as much affect as Covid, and there's a malaise of planning ahead along with the cost of living hitting so we don't want to pay to travel too far and we don't want to pay for more expensive events... So here's the deal - enter into the survey, and you get to put your world view in there, and well - that would help everyone - a lot ! Results so far are also viewable - so help us to get this past at least 500 responses ! (had almost 150 so far). Thank you fetchies - and please share it with your friends, runners and club mates ! sspimg.com Signed Anthony (who's income depends on races taking place....) |

I’ve just had a refund processed for a 2020 event that was cancelled then the 2021 event then 2022 Problem I foresee now is money. Cost of living and fuel going up people will enter less events or do local cheap events |

Just responded, sadly I can't see the other responses as there is an error on the page. I am happy to do smaller local events up to 10k but would prefer not to commit months in advance. I have also said this in the survey but some events *are* selling out really quickly - eg the Stubbington 10k and the Purbrook ladies 5 mile race sold out very quickly so they are obviously doing something right. |

I got back to racing as soon as a local race organiser started staging COVID-compliant events and have raced as much in the past year as I ever have before. I love racing and I'd missed it a lot when we couldn't race. So in this instance I am not part of the problem

responded, however I have various deferred events from last year and am wanting to see whether my health lets me get back to races before entering any new ones (not covid - had swollen knees in August and am now on treatment for rheumatoid arthritis). Also, a local 10km in October sold out within 24hrs when it opened for entries a few weeks ago. I've also just got back from marshalling at a local 5 mile event - this also sold out so there were no on the night entries |

Hi Hellywobs, sorry the results page isn't loading properly right now - my knowledge of google forms can't fix that one. I have tried turning the results on and off again in true computer support IT crowd style. Will be interesting to see the survey results across a good number of responses because we all have our individual reasons to enter or not to enter - the sentiment so far is that lockdown has changed everyone's planning to being more short term, not just those who had covid, and the biggest driver of even more short termism is budget. Also people are just less motivated to do races - and this is across everyone since lockdown, and there are not as many people about to do them, because - covid. And despite people saying lifestyle is the biggest factor for entering a race at the moment - a vast majority then advise the race directors to make their race different with regards to a budgeting factor. So there's clearly some personal responsibility v's "what others need to do to provide for their needs" going on here too. There's also an interesting split in why people go to races. For racing or for the experience. I'm sure some people expect a full on summer fair event-village to be laid on with a free bar and rock concert but somehow to keep the costs down and for it to be local, yet massive, whilst others are happy with a bit of flour and vague map directions written on the back of an envelope as long as the medal looks like it cost the same as the entry fee and is actual gold. There's a wide spectrum of reasons out there ! Please please keep adding into the survey if you haven't already ! Thank you ! |

I answered, but it's really all about how fit I am (not fit enough) rather than anything else, so some things don't really apply.

Answered. I'm a DNS for a race in 2 weeks time. Reason: Originally set for autumn 2020, postponed twice. I'm on day shifts that weekend and no longer really trained for a half. Then again, they've had my money (no regrets) so can't see what the problem is.

I’ve done the survey. For what it’s worth, we’ve found a similar thing with amateur music. Several people have not come back to the choir I sing in because they have found other things to do, or have just got out of the habit. Similarly audience numbers are down because (anecdotally) people have just got used to sitting in front of the TV/laptop/tablet.
