Excellent. I can't afford an electric car but considering I've just put petrol in my old banger (54 plate) for the first time in 159 days, as soon as they get a bit cheaper or there are more available secondhand I'll be in the queue.

I’m not having a go at you personally here HappyGrrr but how many people do you think are likely to have spare fields which they can stick a solar array into?

Well, we don't all need our own fields. As a society we could do something collectively, like.

It's about doing what you can I suppose. Private solar panels can be put in in HG's estate (!) and the surplus generated causes a couple of apartments in Moss Side to be generating net nil carbon for their electricity usage.

I agree if I had a few fields knocking about I’d do the same. A lot of houses here have panels.

TMW - you're absolutely right of course, we're v lucky with loads of space. Many people live in cities, tenements, apartments etc. and don't have access to off street parking at all, never mind space for solar panels. But we do, so just trying to make best use of what we've got.

Most suburban homes have space for 3 or 4 kW worth of solar PV, and as larkim attested, that would be approx half free and half paid to fill up an EV overnight. So down from a full tank costing £4 to £2. Definitely better than the £65 that mine costs now!! (Though obv 50l of petrol will do more mileage - mind you, my car only does 30mpg, so not much more range!) :-) G

Seriously though TMW - even with no solar you can get overnight at 5p/kWh on most energy suppliers - x 8 hours to charge = 300 miles for £4. Not bad, huh?

Not on my economy 7 tariff it’s more than double that unless there’s a specific widget that makes it cheaper for electric cars? I’d dispute how many people can benefit from solar panels as only freeholders in a house will benefit surely.

Still £8 for 300 miles would be really quite nice. I’m sure the government would use this as an opportunity to introduce road pricing to get their VED and Petrol duty costs back!

TMW - I've switched my supplier to Octopus as they have a tariff which is directed at EV drivers specifically. It's not unlike economy7, but has a narrower window of use.

Essentially about 14.5p per unit 4:30am to 00:30am, and then 5p per unit between those times. It's available to all, and of course you can run other overnight high consumption devices then too, e.g. washing machine if it's quiet enough to not disturb.

So at about 3.5miles per kWh, that's just around £4.30 for me for 300 miles.

No widget required, but if you don't already have a compliant smart meter they'll fit it free for you anyway.

For me who charges the car at home, about 50% of my total electricity usage annually will be to power the car, so having that 5p/14.5p split on the rates works out really cost effective, even if I could find a slightly cheaper rate for the daytime if I didn't have the EV.
