I thought I'd try charging today to see how it works so I don't get caught out. Went to Morrisons (Geniepoint) because they were supposedly "plunge pricing" on Electroverse. Plugged in the DC charger, which is apparently 60kw, but was only getting about 7kw/h. Did I do something wrong? Do you normally need to request "fast" or something? |

telegraph.co.uk Telegraph so can't read that HT, but think it says Europe going back to petrol with EV sales dropping? I think Chinese manufacturers might dispute that, but I have no evidence. DG - can start or end slow - were you near 0% or 100% battery? If very cold day can be slower. But no, otherwise v unusual. You were using their cable, not yours? G |

Their cable. Actually, it looks like it was charging quicker while I wasn't watching. It said 7.4-7.9 on the screen, but the app says 5kw in 9 mins! And I've put 10% in, so it was obviously quicker than I thought... |

5kWh so 30 kW. That's about right.

Things I've seen on DC (rapid) chargers in the past:- - charging rate slower / faster at different points in the battery level cycle (this is intentional by the EV designers) so slower charges at low state of charge (typically below 20-25%) and also slower at high states of charge (typically above 80%) - some (not all, but definitely some) rapid chargers share their capacity between multiple cables, and if another user is plugged into the same charger then this can halve the rate of supply (I saw this most obviously at an Instavolt north of Cardiff where I literally watched the rate fall by 50% when a second car pulled up and started charging off the same unit as me, and then it doubled when they departed). Also as HG states, battery temp plays an issue. e.g. the MG4 has a slightly odd feature called intelligent battery heating which, if you were so minded, allows you to heat the battery as you are driving along so that it is warmer when it hits the DC charger you are heading to. To me that feels like a complete waste of energy as any heating that is done costs energy from the battery, so you drain it higher before you hit the rapid charger. By all accounts this should be utterly unnecessary in the UK except for in the very very coldest of conditions (per user feedback on the MG FB group) so switch that off. |

G "Sales of Volkswagen electric cars have plunged by almost a quarter in Europe as demand for battery-powered vehicles stalls and buyers return to petrol..." I'll try and link to another explanation if this article was about VW electrics - suggestion is that German manufacturers are just being massively beaten by Chinese and Korean manufacturers...! |

Off topic, but not sure where to put this on Fetch, but in Japan I noticed very different types of cars from the well known Japanese brands. No idea at all if they’re using the same chassis etc as European models, but they were kind of boxes on wheels really. They probably would be described as cars, but they kind of reminded me in some ways as a modern take on the old/80s Daihatu Hijet van, or similar, in terms of looks. All the big brands had similar looking vehicles, and some EV models I noticed. |

Not exactly HG, but hey let's not have anything remotely negative said of all things EV How comfortable would you be if China were to take large portion of EV market? |

They already have a large portion of it. I'm 100% OK with that, for the record. I wouldn't want any single nation to monopolise it entirely, but whether China, Japan, Korea, USA etc have a large proportion of the market place doesn't worry me at all. It is interesting if VW are declining though; apparently last year they were the biggest seller of EVs in the UK. |
