Does seem strange.

Just looked it up and zapmap says
"How many public charging points are there in the UK? At the end of March 2024, there were 59,590 electric vehicle charging points across the UK, across 32,322 charging locations. This represents a 47% increase in the total number of charging devices since March 2023."
Even if we don't believe the absolute numbers, if zapmap have been using a consistent methodology then the 47% increase in the year has some validity.

Perhapss counts one big box as being one charger too. e.g. the podpoint ones where one unit actually provides two sockets.

That might be somewhere towards the explanation. But if so, possibly quite misleading. Am I right in thinking that you can have more than one vehicle at a charger, as long as there are connectors?

Falkirk shows a location with 10 devices (I thought there were rather more) and 25 connectors. Stirling P&R shows 33 devices and 98 connectors.

Not necessarily - a lot of chargers have both a ccs and chademo cable, but only one can be used at a time, whereas a lot of podpoint chargers serve two bays, with two type 2 connectors thay can be used simultaneously.
In general rapid chargers can only support one vehicle at a time

Just checked my local zapmap infrastructure. My assumption was wrong, in that it shows 4x chargers at my local Tesco where there are actually 2x units, both with a 7kw supply and two sockets that can charge two cars simultaneously. So I do think Dvorak's point is sound.

Even the barest scratching of the surface throws up some oddities. Podpoint themselves claim to have 9,200+ public charging bays, whereas zapmap say they have 4,777 devices. I suppose that could be podpoint playing "marketing speak" by including 2x "bays" for every single charger, but that discrepancy sounds too big.

The data in here is more intriguing
gov.uk

Some highlights:-
- by parliamentary constituency (which should, broadly, be areas of similar population) the range is huge. e.g. Hammersmith 1,622 devices, Weaver Vale (mine) 26 devices.
- they show 53,677 devices in Jan 24; 31,990 lower than 8kw; 11,649 8-49kw; 6,283 50-150kw; 3,835 > 150kw
- some astonishing roll outs - between July 23 and Jan 24 in Hammersmith, they went from 326 chargers per 100k population to 1322 per 100k population!

They get their data from zapmap apparently too.

Looking into Hammersmith etc, their expansion is almost entirely lamppost single chargers in residential areas. So maybe that validates the locations vs chargers data? Though the govt data site does also say at one point that a single unit may be capable of charging more than one device, but it is only counted once, so perhaps my original thought about those double socket podpoint devices is correct - each "unit" is counted only once. Only zapmap would know I suppose!
