Oh yes, there are a few of those. I kind of understand why in *some* respects, it's his drive that has pushed it through. Having watched some of their live presentations, he has some seriously good engineering talent on board. What can I say, we are a geeky household - what else would you do on a Saturday evening other than watch a live presentation about their new SoC and how they are developing their algorithms for autopilot? (not presented by Musk of course, but by their Chief Engineers ....one in particular who really looked as though they wanted the ground to swallow them up ....took me back in time) |

I have to admit that I was sceptical initially RF, but I had time to come around (we had to wait 3 years for it...) We are definitely car people, BTW - I never thought my OH would be the one to go for it (ex-car racer), but it was his idea. |

OK, if second hand is greener, anyone know what to look for on buying second hand electric then? Do the batteries "run out"? (is 3 years, 30K miles still OK)? Are all batteries and charging types "compatible"? How do you buy Tesla second hand, they don't have dealers. I vaguely know what to ask about when I buy a second hand ICE car, but I'd be nervous buying electric. Should I be? G |

There are a number of second hand Electric car dealers popping up now Happy. Problem with the Teslas is that it's really only the the Model S and X that are available as used, and they are still really expensive! |

Happy - yes there is some form of 2nd hand market in EVs. But there has been a significant improvement in the more recent generations of batteries. So, it is important to check for degradation. Newer EVs and batteries will be less suceptible. It's important to do your research! Google and read! As far as charging types, there are a few different ones still at the moment - again research is crucial. They were supposed to be coming down towards some kind of standard (but I know Tesla was not following suit in this). |

I've seen a 3.5 year old S with less than 30K miles that I could afford (more than I would normally spend, but I could stretch!) Thanks fozzy - I'll do a bit of research. In other news (have we got an Enviro thread, btw?) a six seater hydrogen electric aircraft has passed a test flight. Looking to do 50 seaters within 10 years? Can we produce hydrogen without Carbon emission in the production? bbc.co.uk |

Musk is definitely an odd character. But I'd have to be convinced that we'd have as many EVs on the road / rolling off the production line if he / Tesla hadn't so hugely disrupted the market place. That and the VW diesel scandal have really pushed the big manufacturers to compete with Tesla, and like it or not Tesla's are desireable cars - they don't just sell on green credentials, they sell on being fast, clever, easy to run etc. Not plain sailing of course for them, but when Tesla's market cap exceeds Ford and GM *combined* (e.g. Jan this year), despite hardly selling any cars in comparison, you know they've done something remarkable. My pug is coming with an 8 year / 100,000 mile battery warranty HG. So 3 years / 30k is fine! |
