Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Annoyingly the solicitors who are holding my mum's will can't actually fit us in to see us and collect the original until 7th January.

On the up side, the solicitors clerk who I spoke to was able to tell me there are no wishes or instructions regarding her funeral. So when we actually get a death certificate we can talk to the funeral director with some confidence about what should happen next.

Still no sign of the phone call to arrange an appointment with the Registrar either.

I'm really not hopeful about probate being a quick process now.... 😕

That's annoying, @LipGloss. What a palaver this whole process seems to be. (I'd love to understand what happens in other countries with other legal systems!)

My mum’s estate for all it was took no time at all. No probate, can’t even remember if there was a will. In Scotland back in 1995. Council house with nothing to sell.

My wife was hoping to get it done by the end of the year when her father died 6 months ago. My comment: which year?

Wouldn’t surprise me if we still have his house (what remains of it) into 2026. Which really was not the plan…

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
