Dad had his surgery, it's taken hours it's gone OK and he's heading to ITU/HDU later tonight.

Over the last few weeks I've suggested/ pleaded/ begged mum to get a bed downstairs whilst dad is away but shes saud shes fine. Phoned her this evening and she's had my poor brother getting a sofa bed down stairs on his own as she think sleeping downstairs a better idea. Give me strength 🤣🤣

Mum's not great.
Early Saturday morning had paramedics out as struggling to breathe. Oxygen helped and by the time we were over for coffee after parkrun (unaware of earlier drama until then) she was a lot better. The out of hours doctor was with her when we arrived. He was great. Took his time, spoke clearly and appropriate volume to her (hearing not great) and he realised thay the xray results she'd previously been given were rather vague (shadow on lung, needs ct scan). He explained to mum that thee is a 6cm lump that is consistent with a malignant growth. Ct scan needed to verify but it's not looking great (would also explain why 4 courses of antibiotics haven't shifted her cough). Was the correct approach with mum, she wants to know where she stands.
Called round today - she's very tired, and any talking brings on the cough which seems deep from her chest and clearly causes much discomfort.

Still waiting for ct scan appointment (our local surgery phoned today to say they were chasing it up).
So just taking it day by day

TR, hope the wait isn’t too long for your mum’s appointment.

1step, hopefully you can all get a good sleep knowing it went well.

I hope your mum can be kept comfortable whilst she's awaiting further investigations TR. Definitely sounds like a good doctor.

Frustrating 1step.

Good to know it went in after a delay 1step.
((TR))
They are working up to a s3 for mum. She is neither ok where she is or in a mental health unit, but without an assessment it will be more of the same monitoring and testing and assumptions. Ive filled in an aq10 on her behalf, which she wont thank me for, and requested a specialist advocate, but suspect both will be roundly ignored and they’ll keep doing what they usually do. I got the chance to have my say, i can only hope they take it into account post admission. She wont see me, and she isnt accepting any food, so it honestly doesnt help for me to rock up and add to the doorstep crew. Utterly wretched.

Oh Seren I really feel for you. Are you able to think of/look for somewhere that you think it would be appropriate for her to live with Section 117 funding?

Thanks. Without an assessment i think none of it is possible. The system is not set up for bright, mobile, completely entrenched and traumatised 88 year olds with no prior history of social services. My worst fears is they will keep ramping up the interventions rather than address why she feels so unsafe, and adjust the way they are doing things accordingly

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
