Regarding food, there was some talk of moving him to a geriatric ward (rather than orthopaedic), now it looks like he's in for a long haul. That might help with more suitable care. Anyway we'll keep an eye on things.

Well it's nice to hear of someone making an effort to age gracefully but as you say maybe longer days will make her happier TR.

Several of the sheltered housing places round here offer food, it's a shame she doesn't have that option. Could meals be delivered (on top of what you're already doing)?

TR - it sounds like you live relatively close? Which must be a blessing

She has Wiltshire Farm ready meals some days - so just microwavable, but likes to have "homemade" meals as well, so hopefully if we go at lunchtime a couple of days we can provide that mix.
We are very fortunate in that she is appreciative of what we do, and is also realistic about her capabilities and potential need for support.

Yes - we're three miles away, and sister is about five miles away. Sister and I are also on the same page with how we see things.
As i say, I feel very fortunate.

jda, for a prolongued hospital stay, beware of a 'delirium' when fil gets home. We had that after mil last long stay and it was all quite challenging and dd before turning to normal. It did complicate those first 4-6 weeks being back at home.

'm sorry your mum is having a tough time TR but maybe if she does want to go into a home the best thing to do is find one that will suit? Most will offer a week or two of respite so she can see what it would really be like. There is a huge variation between homes so worth looking at as many as are practicable to find the right one if she did choose that path.

I was going to say what LMH said. But also that she's pretty inspiring.

Thanks 😊
We're not closed to a care home, but are aware of all the friends and connections where she is now that she would lose: hence looking at options for staying where she is

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
