I found 'The Cruel Sea' gripping when I first saw it many years ago. 'Das Boot' mixes dread with authenticity - as far as I can tell.

A different type of film entirely but with a submariners' theme is 'Hunt For Red October', with Connery * not* being 007. I like the superpower themes.

Jono.
give the book ago swittle - it became required reading at Annapolis as its description of ASW is quite in-depth + we (the brits are in it quite a bit) :-)

Going by films I've watched a few times so would tolerate further repeat viewings:
The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3 (original version)
The Prestige
Withnail and I
Trading Places
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Lavender Hill Mob
The Warriors

After much consideration, and in no particular order.

Leon
The Empire Strikes Back
The Big Lebowski
Fargo
Heat
Blade Runner (Final cut)
Das Boot

Although I'd would have liked a longer short list. I can't decide which one is irreplaceable.

Fargo is fab. Watched it so many times. First time I'd seen Frances McDormand. Watch Three Billboards at weekend. She's just brilliant. :-) G

Das Boot; great choice.

I tried to take my then girlfriend to see that when I was 17 and it was just released. Failed to convince her. It didn't last.

Jacdaw- As first dates go, that's a classic :)

Can my Game of Thrones box set (series 1-7) count as one choice? I am still on series 1 and would appreciate having the time to watch the rest of it!
