Dvorak
Fuck sake Jono, maybe you are just trolling but this SNP are UKIP/Hamas/National Socialists shite - really, you feel comfortable comparing a democratic party of government campaigning on a referendum with the Nazis? Can you point to anything other than the word National. England has in many ways a totally fucked-up relationship with its own nationalism, having allowed may aspects to be associated with unsavoury xenophobes, but most other countries don't view things in that way. I suggest that you might like to suggest to some other countries that they rectify their historical mistakes: Estonia, Slovakia, Finland, Belgium, to name a few. Perhaps Austria should recognise all its common ground with Germany and apply to unite? It could have a snappy name, Anschluss, say. Or maybe you would be happier with a war, rather than a vote? |

soz, its funny the things you think up when out running. I still think Nationalistic Politics are dangerous and have put this over in a very crass way. I do agree Dvorak that we in England do struggle with our identity. but disagree that the union was an historical mistake and yes of course a vote is preferable to open conflict. I think I'll go back to my original position a couple of months ago of letting the Scots decide whether to stay or go and if you leave the rest of us will have to get on with it. |

sorry I know I'm a twat - but before you burn effigy's of Orangutans you need to look up what is meant by National Socialism - there is a long history of National Socialism parties across Europe before 1933. Reading the description of the SNP it seems they shared a few similarities and as the -founder of the SNP I think it was - refused to fight against the Axis powers - you'll have to forgive my ignorance and quick reading of the interweb. I leave you lot alone now - once again sorry if I've caused any upset. |

" Because the south-east runs the country for the benefit of the south-east."...... and the Scottish Parliament does not exercise its powers for the benefit of the central belt?? There is a certain irony that as an Aberdeenshire council taxpayer I find that some of my local taxes ends up subsidizing the central belt spending and whilst they waste money on trams (still yet to spot one) and an upsidedown boat for a parliament (that I read has to be replaced soon) and I get to subsidise the Forth Road crossing but the Scottish pot is dry for the Aberdeen Peripheral Route . ... Sorry guys Edinburgh parliament and London Parliament are different turds... buts lets not say the Scottish one smells any better.

JRitchie - London is controlled by Tories. I couldn't see a Tory politician from here on a clear day if you set fire to them. Edinburgh is run by the SNP and there are quite a few of them between my bit of the north and yours. So I prefer decisions made in Edinburgh on the whole, even those I don't like. That doesn't necessarily mean independence, there are a lot of advantages to the status quo. But it means Scotland is a better place to live since devolution.

Time to get vocal about it then JR. If we had our own government then you could rally them to decentralise further. The SNP have already pledged to give more decision making powers to Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles come independence. "We believe that the people who live and work in Scotland are best placed to make decisions about our future – the essence of self-determination, therefore we support subsidiarity and local decision making." newsnetscotland.com |

I do tend to think that independence will come in the end, though this may well not be the time. The clear difference between 1979 and 1997 (other than a fair vote ;-)) was Margaret Thatcher. If I was to project the political development of England in the next 20 years it would probably not be in a direction favoured by the Scots.
