Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Use it or lose it for sure. Last year I clocked up hundreds of miles on my bike and I certainly toughened up. Going out last week for the first time on my road bike for months - nightmare!

I do use butt butter but even that didn't seem to help last week :-(

you can get what appear casual shorts with a padded insert and / or a removable padded cycle short liner. Best of both worlds. I got a pair from Halfords Boardman range last year - v useful for casual pootling beyond the trip to shops and rides when course measuring as have pockets for pens and notebooks

I've got some Gore padded shorts - I think I just need to do a bit more of it :-)

By all accounts the "right" seat properly fitting your sit bones (they're a thing apparently) makes a big difference.

I swapped the stock seat for a Charge Spoon saddle, noticeably much less discomfort in the undercarriage area after a long ride.

Ouch Rich!

Fetch, padded shorts are probably better than a padded saddle. It does take a bit of wearing in (of your undercarriage!). Try to make sure you're resting on your sitbones rather than your bottom. It helps to make sure you're not leaning on your shoulders and arms. That's the next thing that aches :-)

also a bit of tinkering with saddle height, angle and adjust forward and backward on seat rails to get it into that "just right" feel

MsG - I did find that my hands, elbows and shoulders were aching a bit towards the end, but I'd done a YouTube Body Pump class (also first in a long time) the previous morning, so it was hard to separate the potential causes :-)

I'm thinking I might try some cheap toe cages as a next step towards being clipped on. I found that my feet would often slide forward on the peddles during a gear change, and that would sometimes make for a real loss of momentum - so it'd be nice to at least control that. And if I get to make even a little bit more use of the whole pedal rotation (is there a fancy name for that?), then it can only be a win.

A bit tricky at the moment, but a lot of bike shops will do trial saddles, or exchange policies, so you can try different ones to see what suits. Saddles can be very personal, and it can be worth the time to find one you like.

In the saddle front, 1) don't confuse a bad set up with a bad saddle. Before changing get some advice. 2) saddles are very personal but why do pro's all go full razor blade? 3) some already said it, no substitute for time on the bike. 4) chamois cream can only do so much.
