I never went to clipless pedals as I just don't like my feet locked onto the pedals...even for cycling longer distances with my 'real' cyclist friends, when cycling to Paris or Amsterdam.

I'm so accident prone that attaching my feet onto the pedals is just too dangerous for me!

Fetch, I think it was very popular to pull up on the upstroke years ago. This was replaced by the current theory of a smooth peddling motion.

Mandymoo, that sounds like something I'd do, so I'm still on flat pedals.

A few years ago, I remember going out with a few friends from Wimbledon to Box Hill and back again and several of them did some amazingly hilarious slo-mo falls. One didn't unclip in time at an intersection, another leaned against what looked like a substantial shrub which caved in and he fell into it (while still clipped in)! ;)

The theory behind the pedal stroke being equal and not losing the efficiency at the top as Totriornottotri (I think I got your name right!) says.

This needs to be renamed the pedal thread 😀

I believe it’s crucial when you get your first road bike to avoid clips for a couple of months. That way you train yourself to not think about clipping out and guarantee some great comedy moments later on.

Yep, I made the error is ensuring my pedals where adjusted to maximum show grip because I wanted maximum power transfer. The thought this makes it nearly impossible to unclip while vertical didn't cross my mind.

The railings really hurt in the way down.

When we've done pedals and cleats the next big topic has got to be saddles :-)

I know it's personal - *very* personal - but everyone's shape is slightly different. I'm envious of the women in Team GB who have saddles made to measure. If I had limitless funds, so would I! :-)

The saddle was probably the main thing that made me keen to get home yesterday. I am hoping that I will evolve a tougher undercarriage :-)

"Butt butter" helps

I was up to 3-4 hrs on road bike (3 on wattbike) but now find I can't do 30-40 mins on my turbo without getting tender. Use it or lose it!

I have some great unclip failures to my name. Including a 60m awesome ride without incident and then a plonk less than 1/2m from home that really hurt my knee as I stuck that out to err stop myself falling!??!

um
fetch - have you invested in padded shorts? Probably the best way to spend money to enjoy cycling. Or enjoy the day after cycling.

Or put a folded small towel on the saddle.

If there’s a thread for this already, I haven’t seen it :-) But I thought it’d be good to have...
