The cracks are in the rim; 32 spokes on the cracked (rear) wheel. 700c, 20mm internal width/24.5mm outer. (Not sure about depth).

I'm not sure I'm ready to drop the kind of money that Wheelsmith looks like I'd be paying.

Someone pointed me towards these Hunt 4 season wheels: huntbikewheels.com

But I have no idea about any of this - I'm completely out of my depth.

You could always sling any old crap on knowing you'll be replacing it at some point, rather than spending an utter fortune on a wheel and being royally pissed off when it lasts only slightly longer than the cheap one.

Wise words, richmac.

Honestly, I thought my old house was a money pit - but that's peanuts to this cycling malarky!

That sounds like a good suggestion.

But it might fail catastrophically...

I would talk to somebody like Spa cycles or SJS about a handmade wheel/set.

I found an article that talks about the typical weight limits for wheels:

cyclingbeginner.com

towards the bottom (of the article, not the rider) they give some advice on what to look for in a wheel (number of spokes, and amount of inflation seem key). And they recommend some wheels to try, although I am always a bit cynical about how recommended products work, having seen how the magazine industry fudge things ( :-O ).

Do you know what width tyres you're running? Assuming you have the clearance in brakes (not an issue with discs) and stays, wider tyres may help damp the load onto the wheels.

Hunt wheels are pretty decent. I've got some on my CX bike, and YP has just ordered a pair of them exact ones I believe.

Spa are a good recommendation - old school bullet proof touring wheels.

Vittoria Terreno Zero 700 x 38mm - I doubt I'd get anything wider in there.
