Seems to be shaping up like the Ashes last year, big wins coupled with heavy defeats. No consistency.

We'll find out next week if the performances are still up and down. I might even be able to do a bit of live reporting from day one at the Oval 😀

To answer PB's earlier question about up-and-coming spinners

espncricinfo.com

I had heard Mason Crane was the business so disappointed to see he can't even get a game, now. Maybe his time will come.

I remember when I was a lad, one of my youth team mates, a left arm spinner, found himself thrust into 1st team action due to a lack of spinning options. He did OK but by the end of the season declared himself pleased to be the 2nd best left arm spinner in the league. On closer inspection it turned out there were only 2 left arm spinners in the league

My younger brother was an offie, used to spin it loads, he was also a Rugby Union hooker and had huge hands. Basically he bowled it pretty quick and span it in every ball, most batsmen coould not get to him, he didn't get that many wickets, but gave away very little runs.

Being a hooker he moved V-e-r-y slowly and I once saw him get run out for a quick single. He marched down the pitch and was about to wallop the other batsman ( I could see it in his eyes), when A very quick and brave umpire intervened.

Interesting stats from ESPNcricinfo. Ali has the best strike rate of any English spin bowler since the second world war. He also has the worse average and economy of any English bowler with more than 20 wickets.

I suppose that is ok in this day and age, you want to get people out and scoring rates are high. I imagine all spinners have worse averages, covered wickets and all that kind of stuff.

So Basically batsman, particularly those who get slowed by our very good seam attack, can fill their boots off him but if they go for the slog they usually get mugged off quickly.
