It suggests to me that although Ali may indeed pick up wickets by batsmen looking to slog him and do quite well at buying wickets, he isn't going to go to India in the winter and bowl us to a win.

Ceratonia
Going back to the big wins & big defeats comment from yesterday, I think winning the toss and batting first was a big advantage in both these games. England were pumping the air as soon as the coin came up the wrong way for the Pakistan captain. If Pakistan had won the toss, we'd have had a very different game I imagine. There's a case to be made for tossing the coin once at the start of series like this and simply alternating for the subsequent games. |

Issue with that Ceratonia is that it allows the home groundsman to prepare very specific pitches to order, as he'll know in advance whether the home team is batting or fielding first (for test 2 onwards). Hands the home team a massive advantage IMO.

:-0, changing the whole history of cricket!! Yes, I don't know the stats, but what is the history of batting first winning the game, it must be huge....even so, I think that is apart of the game, it should be, ok we lost the toss, but we're going to fight to the end of the game, that doesn't happen much, if at all, these days. I remember watching Thorpe bat for ages in a losing game against the aussies, could have been his first test hundred, it was great.Mid 80s, sitting in the garden, BBQ.... |

I think I've done this right (last 10 years): Teams ordered by # wins when they won the toss stats.espncricinfo.com And when they lost the toss: stats.espncricinfo.com Thus in the last 10 years, England are the best team when we lose the toss... |

Disagree about Rashid - he wins games by bowling teams out in the 2nd inns - he does it all the time for Yorkshire and did it in the UAE (ok we didn't win the game, but he still took wickets).

WS, more than happy to show off my view from the Oval as long as it's bright and sunny and I have a pre 11am pint 😀
