Picking the tests you’re most likely to do well in sounds like Boycott style average preserving. I do understand the principle though. It’s not the same rotation policy that Hick and Ramps suffered from.
However if the stand-in doesn’t do well either it begs the question if it’s worth it as a policy.

I just re-listened to the 3rd episode of The Ashes Project, the fitness coach talks specifically about Anderson and Broad, how they are very fit indeed, but also how, specifically they only have a short period of peak fitness, and they are prepared and aimed that way. Where they are going to be most effective (hopefully), i.e 2 or 3 tests.
This, of course will all go wrong when Aus are 300 odd for 2 at the end of day 1, or england are 190 ao.
Statistically, it is even worse, the team that wins the first session, wins the test and wins the series.....it could be all over by 2am on wednesday.

England are probably in trouble for multiple reasons if they have to field for more than 3 sessions
