I suspect the ODI opening has caused it - he's given license to go out and hit everything. And then he tries a middle ground in test cricket and it doesn't work.

In England’s case I add 4 - Boycs’ 2, plus the 2 we always lose just before or after the next interval (lunch, tea). So, 245 behind with 3 wickets left….. To be fair, another day 2 fight back - if we actually managed some sort of competence on a Day 1 as well we may yet see a competitive test match.
