We must have started watching around the same time, Fetch - at the start of each series in the mid-80s, it always seemed to be a coin-toss whether it'd be Downton or Bruce French with the gloves. For 80s cricket fans, there's a piece on the England '88 debacle here. Lots of bonus Essex coverage for Grep - Gooch, Foster, Captain Pringle (!) and even a mention of John Childs in the comments... theguardian.com |

Dooogs - my first memories were probably of Geoff Lawson dropping a skier off Lamb as England won the first test in 1985. I got totally hooked that summer.

I think I watched on and off in 1984 but the first series I watched properly was the 1985 Ashes. I remember Kepler Vessels opening and thinking " don't they have some unusual names in Australia?": I was astounded to see him opening for SA a few years later...

Probably the 1984 Windies for me. I *did* watch a bit before that including one memorable afternoon in 1981 (it was on at a friend's house, let's be honest). Somerset - England - struggling to raise a side.... the BHF of course always get selected Trescothick + Lathwell Compton Rose * Hildreth (should have been selected, has the most FC runs to not be selected EVER) Botham Overton C Marks Bess Caddick Leach SMJ Woods in the 1800s - big gap |

You could strengthen your spin attack with Blackwell?

Some words need clarifying there, Nico, such as: "strengthen" "spin" and "attack" with reference to Ian Blackwell. |

Hmm - Leicestershire: Bowlers - Broad, Hoggard, deFreitas, Illingworth (reserves: Ken Higgs, Les Taylor) Keeper - R Tolchard. Am going to have to think about batters - James Taylor. Before that will need to check who have England caps (my main era was Dudleston, John Steele, Balderstone - can't think of many who challenged for England spots) |
