that's 952 families scared about their loved ones that's 80 people fighting of their lives
that's 952 people who, if they survive, will have months potentially years ahead of them of recovery from a virus that you seem to think isn't a major concern You tell that to the people affected by those in hospital now you tell the people who have lost people to this virus without being able to be with them or even have a "proper funeral" you tell that to the thousands living with the impact of having had the virus
JR you make it sound as if you think this is not something we should be concerned about that the world is over reacting
I just hope you don't have your views changed due to a loved one getting ill or dying because of this virus

The numbers are relatively small because of the measures that have been taken/are being taken. If these measures were all swept away the numbers would be enormous within a short time. You can't have the old life back without several hundred thousand deaths. Unless you believe that our decidedly shonky TTI process can keep a cap on the situation.

UC How can we know people have long term problems - the disease is apparently novel & only been around a few months? Plenty of people with flu suffer post viral symptoms for months post flu.

Test and trace can only be effective if the numbers are small. That's part of the reason it is so successful in NZ. If we can get the numbers down we can open much more of our society

"How can we know people have long term problems "
We know that keeping people on ventilation for an extended time means they need long recovery
simple things like being able to walk unassisted again use their lungs again
people get blood clots on their lungs from this and therefore need injections for 6+ mths lose so much body weight and muscle and muscle tone that they can't stand up
they have set up nightingale hospitals to help with long term impacts
NHS staff and surviving patients are being treated for PTSD
I'd say we are already aware of long term problems

What is clear is we have people here with views at either end of a scale.
I personally don’t get why we wouldn’t do simple measures to protect ourselves and others, I don’t like the life we are living at the moment but I’d rather that than have the death rates we had a few months back.
I have made a decision who I will share an extended bubble with but I miss the freedom to just arrange to go out, the ease of a shopping trip to town, maybe have a beer or some food but maybe we wouldn’t - not needing to ore plan everything, the freedoms to meet different friends or the group gatherings we are well known for with said friends and their families.
But we’ve worked out keeping in touch, we know friendships will last but we need to be careful not to over extend the tracing ability.
I do hope and pray we find a vaccine but as DocM rightly said we now know how to identify it quickly, to isolate ourselves, to initiate tracking and inform others so they can stay isolated until they are tested, for those unlucky enough to need treatment hospitals are better equipped (as long as we keep those numbers low enough).
I saw a real hard hitting post on FB a few weeks ago from the gay community on AIDS about how the disease impacted their lives forever, how many of their friends died, how they were scared, how far they’ve come.
I do think we have restrictions now but be sensible, reducing where we go, cleaning touch points if people come to our homes, washing our hands and wearing a face mask is helping even if it’s a little and if you don’t want to do it then don’t but don’t cry if you or your loved ones get infected. I’d rather take every precaution I can to keep me and others safe but that is my decision.

Can’t people see the emotional manipulation that’s going on? I could post here - how many people have cancer - hundreds if not thousands missing out on screening & treatment. What about all their families losing their family members - what about all those in agony & suffering because that can’t get treatment. Perfectly preventable diseasss that will now go in to kill as undiagnosed early. Did you worry last year or the year before about the tens of thousands of people with flu or other respiratory illness? No & neither did anyone else so excuse me if I refuse to be manipulated to feel quilty about wanting to live a normal life.

JR having lost dad to cancer last year after fighting it for 10 years and having had at least 3 separate confirmed cases of cancer and a FIL who is mid treatment don't even bother going there with that one
I have seen many friends and family suffer from cancer and it's a well know and documented disease
CV is not we need to learn more and respect it more

And if wearing a face mask works why are cases in Europe where they are wearing them outdoors allegedly increasing at such high rates?
