Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I agree with that HGF but I think there was a case for masks way back in the early days when we all still went food shopping and the virus was in greater circulation. Back then the official message was there is no benefit in wearing a mask.

Ah yes. I agree, we could have been asked to wear them then too. Scientific evidence has moved on I believe. Marginal benefit in wearing a mask, but some. But greatest benefit was just stay home. Didn't want to dilute/confuse the message. Now we are moving away from stay home. So it's appropriate now that we are allowed and able to go to public places, to do the new marginal things to protect (others mostly) by wearing a mask. Simples! :-) G

mum thinks the advice then was not due to science but because they didn't want the public use masks the NHS needed

I wondered that but also think the lack of science message has helped to build sone level of resistance.

K5gus - chance of some people being in close proximity to the very few infected is very high whilst chance of it being a particular person is very low.
Back to my point of the solution being about a population rather than an individual.

It really doesn't help that the WHO have changed their advice. For what it's worth, I think their original position was "only a proper surgical mask properly worn and handled will offer complete protection, so don't bother". The position now is more that it's a component of reducing transmission; they're not now claiming that any face covering will offer *complete* protection, just risk reduction & population benefit.

I think Pix's mum has a point, and this is partly why the ruling for transport is mainly about fabric masks rather than disposables.

But we’re not getting back to normal are we. Opening shops etc but only with mandatory masks is not normal. Infection rates have fallen over the last 3 months worhout the need for a mandatory mask. As far as I’m concerned life is getting more & more restrictive. Be interesting to see how people will eat & drink in a cafe or pub with a mask on! Obviously they can’t so more likely to catch something from fiddling with them.

Isn’t there a potential health hazard in just binning a single use mask in regular waste? Hospitals put them in hazardous waste yet millions will be simply throwing in a regular bin. That to me is far more risky to public health than just keeping your distance whilst out & about.

Who is going to be the arbiter of when we can stop wearing them? I’ve no doubt there will be long term health issues if you are made to wear them all day (if you work in a factory/shop). Even in hospital medical staff take breaks without wearing it for obvious reasons.

HGF could stand for many things Bazo. Especially the F!! :-O I was assuming a typo rather than taking any offence! ;-)

I don't like shopping anyway, so I'll just avoid shops. Great excuse. Can we keep this going for a few years please (joke!)

Wishing schools all the best for getting back to some kind of normal for next term - for the sake of pupils, teachers and parents alike.

I listened to most of the briefing for Scotland at lunchtime and what a marked difference from anything we've heard from Westminster. Clear, human communications with empathy and understanding. I'm really pleased that restrictions are starting to be lifted over the border and there's a clear strategy for what's happening when.

We're keeping an eye on Scotland as Mr S's parents live in Dumfries & Galloway. We had hoped we may be able to visit as restrictions start to lift, but that's one of the areas that will still be under harsher restrictions and the advice is not to take a trip over the border, so we won't.

Re mask wearing. I started wearing a buff over my face in my local small shop a few weeks ago on the basis that I don't care if people look at me and think I'm daft, but if people start to see masks it becomes more normal. I now have some masks which stay in place better, so I wear those on the few occasions when I'm inside a shop. Definitely seeing more people do likewise, but still in a minority.
