I tend to agree. We're of course biased as runners, but the spirit and the letter of the law is to keep us all apart. Whether you keep apart on a 1 mile walk round your housing estate or a 20 mile run from home, providing you are alone or with a household member, you are being compliant with all aspects of the law and adding both zero risk to yourself and others. Yes, you might fall and need medical assistance, but I suspect the likelihood is higher of doing a DIY job around the house. I for one have no moral problem with going out, choosing a quiet route, observing distancing and then running for a couple of hours. If only I could find the motivation without a race to plan for!! |

On BBC Question Time last night, when discussing the behaviour of the police, Lord Finkelstein emphasized that in this unprecedented situation sometimes the police will over-react; sometimes we will get it wrong. In his words ‘We all need to be kind to each other.’ Maybe Derbyshire police over-reacted. As far as I understand, most police forces are still aiming to ‘police by consent’ rather than issuing unwarranted fines. |

This weekend would have been a 15 mile run ahead of a marathon in April but now I can't be bothered going out for half of that as it has been moved until late summer. The 2m rule within supermarkets is acceptable if queuing outside or at the checkout. However, I'm not going to stand or walk around the shop next to the same person, let alone touch them. Just keep moving, fill your basket/trolley asap and go home. |

Going off at a tangent Larkin but I do agree with you, I didn't realise how much of my motivation was wrapped up in getting out and racing. It's hard without!

The biggest misconceptions I see at the moment are reflected in comments like "the council are still cutting grass, how on earth do they justify that as 'essential work'" and "I keep seeing loads of elderly couples out walking, do they not realise they should be indoors for 12 weeks".

No HG I strenuously object to the suggestion that less is best for exercise. I don’t think there is any support for that in the legislation, guidelines, medical advice or common sense.

Cut the grass? Yes, of course - just wash your hands afterwards! After all Groundskeeper Willie needs to get his fresh air and exercise too ... (he might even be in grid for WSW too ...)

I'm confused, whether Scotland [and NI] has different law and guidelines or not ? I blame sloppy journalism - eg the above article talks of UK lockdown, but reading the article mentions guidelines issued to 44 forces in England & Wales, but then later on talks about British policing, British mainland, etc. If there are different laws/guidelines, does anyone know if there are any differences, or are they they same ? |
