larkim, SIs still need to be approved, albeit retrospectively. They cannot however be amended, only binned, so it would be some rebellion for this to happen, as Starmer's Labour are in bed with this government.

Happy, thanks for your thanks😊 but I wish the reports had been more positive. Just hope that the vaccine does its stuff over the next couple of months.

The existing regulations were amended anthony, so not sure what you mean that they can't be amended. Yes, they need approval of course, it's not just a ministerial SI that can be amended by the pen, but if the govt tabled an amendment mid-Feb to extend the regulations until 31st May etc, they'd have no problem pushing that through. Agree larkim, I'm saying they can't be amended by the commons.

The data I'm finding, such as it is, is that up to 25% of people with COVID in hospital are thought to have acquired the infection in hospital after being admitted for non-COVID reasons. Which is not at all the same as "25% of people who go into hospital for any reason will catch COVID in hospital".

@HG - I expect to live for another 40 years or so, so a few months of restrictions don't mater hugely. But my fit and active parents are in their late 70s. Even if they better the current average life expectancy, they are looking at future springs and summers countable on their fingers, and a decline in their capability too. Simultaneously their grandchildren are growing up through periods which they're desparate to participate in - those days / weeks / months can never be recovered. So yes, I'm patient and can live without normality throughout this year; but there's plenty of people who won't be quite so relaxed about ongoing restrictions. |

@anthony - aha, I see. I wasn't ever considering that someone other than the govt would change the lockdown legislation. My point was that the fixed 31st March date in the SI is moveable easily by the govt and isn't really worth the paper it's written on as a guide for how long lockdown will continue for; it will just get amended as necessary continually.

I can foresee a point where the government snaps though if ministers push too far.

Ah, I see what you mean V'rap. Not sure if that's better or worse?! You're in hospital with Covid. 1 in 4 of those got the Covid because they came to hospital for something else. Argh!
