Swittle that's Stag hunting (formerly with dogs allegedly) not deer stalking. Stalking is as I said one or two guns plus a guide.

Interesting article in last week's Sunday Times about the outbreak of Hong Kong flu in 1968 and how (1) high interest rates prevented Government borrowing (so no furlough or equivalent schemes) and (b) no social media (so less discussion/panic buying/misinformation etc). Although death rates were high (and children vulnerable), people had no choice but to get on with it. Could we learn from this? Worth a read if you can get the link to work. thetimes.co.uk |

We could probably learn from the Black Death too because nothing works like nostalgia for the old days.

It's worth noting that medical technology was very different in the 60's - ventilators were rudimentary and ICU was very different. So the ability to 'cope' was different - sophisticated medical facilities were not overwhelmed because they simply did not exist. The outlook was perhaps different too - the notion of falling ill and dying being far more an expected outcome whereas now people expect modern medicine to give them a much better chance of survival. So the modern day choice is different - we can chose to have more people survive. We could just get on with it in an old school way and there would be avoidable deaths due to people not being able to get the best health care available and more people being exposed to it. Seems quite an extreme position to take when there are alternatives. |

Fellrunning: I understood what you wrote. The proximity of my post to yours may have suggested otherwise. The thread's function is to discuss aspects of covid-19. An article reporting on absence of social distancing is surely fair game.
