I raced at the Brompton World Champs in 2009, Roberto Herras started in my group and performed significantly better than I did on that day.

I commute on an Orbit (Sheffield) frame rebuilt as single speed, but am furloughed at present.

@ rf_fozzy the Boardman tweet I linked to earlier was his response to an MP calling for more helmet use. He's often quoted as saying helmets aren't even in the top 10 of things to address to get more folks on bikes.

Points made by other Fetchies this afternoon seem to cover most of the arguments for both sides. This is an argument which will likely rumble on long past any of our lifetimes.

I also own a carerra kraken which is on long term loan to a colleague, to be returned to me if and when she ever upgrades or moves away. It was a bit knackered but she had a neighbour who fixed it up, so when it comes back to me it’ll be in way better nick than it was. And meantime she’s got wheels

RHB - I was there that year :¬)

I do not own a hybrid or a gravel bike but believe I have pretty much everything else :¬)

@ Gobi You probably performed significantly better than me that day too... p.s. re: your bike collection, at least 2 BMX's then, one for racing and one for the skatepark & dirtjumps? ;)

This thread has gone bonkers which is brilliant, except I can't keep up. More posts than WSW.

Welcome Maz and anyone else.

The thread has reminded me I have clothes at work that I haven't seen since March 17th and I can't remember which ones.

In winter I ride a Genesis Day One single speed with full mud guards and panniers.

In summer I ride the entry level boardman drop bar that they've now dropped, bought it from Halfrauds 2 seasons out of date. Going to buy some detachable panniers if I ever go back to work.

Both are flawed andI love them.

And I own a camera and I report close passes, not all just the worst to the police.

I ride a Cannondale CAAD 8 which, to be fir, has been nicknamed 'Triggers Broom' in the office due to upgrades and whatnot over the years/

Also have a Fuji Tahoe for the small amount of MTB'ing that I do - and for when I go out with the kids.

About This Thread

Maintained by HappyG(rrr)
There is a nice thread about commuting to work by running, and there are loads of terrifying threads about bikes and cycling which are about carbon and grams of weight and lycra - not this one: how to dry your kit, how to carry/store your work clothes etc. and some bike specific stuff about best mudguards to minimize wet and dirt and maybe some stuff about cycle paths, safety, simple bike maintenance etc.

And if you declare yourself at the outset as:
A. Total bike head, train lots, do bike races/triathlons and the commute bit is just a way of getting extra miles in and is done at full bike training pace.
B. Bike for fitness (either with running as main sport or not) and like to do bike in lycra, at reasonable speed, certainly always shower necessary!

C. Bike is firstly a mode of transport, essential for the commute, sure a bit of fitness is good, but it's secondary. Safe, reliable and clean are the priorities.
