Bog standard hybrid, it only needs to get me five miles...

Used to be at college with a good cyclist, he'd cycle from Oxford home to Manchester as a good training ride. Not sure that counts as a commute but it saved on his train fare.

Have worked at same place as wife since we were married hence tandem most of the time :-) Cannondale touring tandem which was a design classic that set the standard for decades. Possibly not being made right now, our first one is 25 years old and we bought what may be the very last one (in our size anyway) a couple of years ago as an upgrade/replacement/spare.

But I do really like my Canyon endurace as a general going out for a ride bike. Going to work I'd want something a bit more suitable for carrying luggage, but I'm no longer commuting.

It's a Boardman as that was easy to get through the cycle to work scheme; a few years old now so I don't remember the exact model.

I also have a Boardman road bike through C2W but I don't use that for commuting - hardly for anything at the moment. The longest ride I've done on it was the first Ride London.

I have a Connodale CAAD12 105. It's aluminium and replaces a steel, cheap Fuji track that I owned for 12 years. They are both similar "race" geometry (the Fuji track is a common beginner track bike so not quite as aggressive positioning as a premium bike).

After a bad fall on the Fuji, I couldn't get the courage up to ride it again, so sold it.

I have a Bromton too which I love. They are such good bikes . I have the ML3 with has a U shape handlebar that flexes quite a lot by design and is 3 speed, standard. In hindsight I think a flat handle bar and lower gear range might have suited me better. I spend most time in the middle gear. The low gear can make some climbs a bit challenging

B'twin Triban 3 (the red version) here, was great bang for the buck when I bought it and as the only road bike I've ridden since my 5spd Sun Solo from about 1985.

Off topic but a friend got into cycling at Herne Hill velodrome (it's not far from here) just before all this kicked off and got himself a track bike - he's definitely an N+1 kind!

If I was buying again I'd probably make more effort to try various bikes out before deciding. The Boardman is OK but for a tallish woman there are probably better options out there.

About This Thread

Maintained by HappyG(rrr)
There is a nice thread about commuting to work by running, and there are loads of terrifying threads about bikes and cycling which are about carbon and grams of weight and lycra - not this one: how to dry your kit, how to carry/store your work clothes etc. and some bike specific stuff about best mudguards to minimize wet and dirt and maybe some stuff about cycle paths, safety, simple bike maintenance etc.

And if you declare yourself at the outset as:
A. Total bike head, train lots, do bike races/triathlons and the commute bit is just a way of getting extra miles in and is done at full bike training pace.
B. Bike for fitness (either with running as main sport or not) and like to do bike in lycra, at reasonable speed, certainly always shower necessary!

C. Bike is firstly a mode of transport, essential for the commute, sure a bit of fitness is good, but it's secondary. Safe, reliable and clean are the priorities.
