I love the expression 'brilliantly violent' to describe a recording

I wonder what people would vote for if we didn't allow anything released when you were between the ages of 13 and 30? Most albums I suspect are chosen from that era.

I find it easy to pick groups/individuals, but for a classic album it should be one that stands out from their oeuvre, so mine are

Hunky Dory - Bowie
Funeral - Arcade Fire
Sergeant Pepper - Beatles
New Boots and Panties - Ian Dury and The Blockheads.
Who's Next - the Who

The following were more difficult, I could have chosen two or three for each, depending how I felt at the time.
Over-Nite Sensation - Zappa
After the Gold Rush - Neil Young
Nursery Crime - Genesis
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
LA Woman - The Doors
What's the Story, Morning Glory - Oasis

I'd probably have at least a couple of Beatles albums, a couple of Bob Dylan albums, Velvet Underground & Nico, Bridge over Troubled Water, Pet Sounds, possibly Stand! by Sly and the Family Stone. All from before I was born.

I generally find music from before the 80s pretty meh.

Prove me wrong, I'm working from home this afternoon and my Spotify mix just finished...

This is entirely fair, although I might extend it a bit and say anything you first heard between those ages - for me there's a load of Dylan albums from the mid 60s to the mid 70s that I adore, but I didn't know much about Dylan until my teens in the mid 80s.

Nirvana - Nevermind
RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magik

Both released just 4 days before my 13th birthday ruled in and then cruelly ruled out so quickly! 😢😉

Zombie by Fela Kuti
Which was of course responsible for way more political unrest, anarchy and confrontation in 1977 than anything generated by a boyband put together by a King's Road fashion boutique owner.

About This Thread

Maintained by McGoohan
A spin-off from the 50 New Albums in 2023.

Some Fetchies have been mentioning or revisiting some of the classics, so not necessarily a new album to them and definitely not a *new* new album. As such, I thought we could have a new thread to discuss such classics.

Already mentioned:
Van Morrison Astral weeks
The Beach Boys Pet Sounds

I've been wondering, depending on whether there's any demand for it, that participants might each suggest a classic album (per month?) so that t...
