That sounds good Stilldreaming.

My son (9) now has work set by his teacher. Yesterday he had to write a descriptive description - actually get his brain working, and his imagination. Up to now all the work has been watching a video and answering questions or reading a passage and answering questions. He has never been great at using his own imagination and yesterday it caused a meltdown from him, followed by me shutting myself in my home office (box room) and having a meltdown myself.

He managed 2 sentences in one hour, eventually.

Then the next task he informed me was way too much work to get done in an hour. I explained that it didn't matter if it took him an hour today, then another one tomorrow - it was designed as a task to be split over 2 days and I told him that it could take as many days as it needed to.

I think I eventually got through that there was no pressure.
He seems in really good spirits today - but I'm totally knackered.

It certainly is. That and the fact that 2 out of 6 of my team have just been furloughed so I'm having to learn a whole new set of stuff as I take on some of their workload.

If kids don't want to write, would it be possible to get them to record their descriptive sentences and then write/type them up later? I often find that if children are reluctant to write, if I offer to write down their sentences as they say them, they can produce much better work. (Obviously you can't do this all the time, but sometimes it just gets the ball rolling!). All parents trying to teach their kids at home are amazing imho :-)

Good idea thanks and.
I’ll keep that in mind for next time.

Today has been better. He spent an hour this morning on a WhatsApp video call with his mate while they both researched and took notes on Mayans ready to make a fact file PowerPoint.

Yes, yes, yes.
Google Docs, speech to text is great. Various other options too.

Sure writing is important, but as a teacher, not so important that it should stop learning elsewhere. If they know about something and can explain it, they are showing understanding.

I'd agree, COTH. Working in a special school environment, there are lots of situations where we act as a scribe for pupils to allow them to express their understanding and knowledge without the hindrance of any literacy difficulty (which may be real or perceived because of a lack of confidence).

I'm just popping into this thread because I'm on my school's rota to be in school next week. I'm sorting out some resources that may or may not be used. The team of staff who are in are thinking of doing a VE day celebration theme. We thought we could make decorations, find music from the right era, make cakes and have a little party (social distanced one of course!).

There are some lovely resources on the Royal British Legion website....

HowFar?
The dictation keyboard on the iPad works really well for getting ideas down without the extra burden of having to write.

Purps
I've not been well over the last week, several migraines (or one long one with a period of mild respite on Monday) so my children have watched several films, had some time scooting/biking, and creative play with clay and kinetic sand. I'm struggling with it all, I'm exhausted really.
