Let's support each other while the children are off.

Use this to vent frustration, ask questions, pool resources and anything else we think might help.

At the end of the day, a lot of parents are not teachers, wouldn't want to be teachers and don't know what to do, we will get through this together and do our best. That is all we can do.

I've just posted this in another thread in response to someone not knowing how to go forwards. It's my personal opinion, it may be different to other people, and I'm OK with that. :)

The government have said that schools will provide CARE for children of key workers, not education, and I think that's really important in how you approach the prospect of stuff at home. I am NOT going to be my children's academic teacher, most of the stuff they will do will be stuff they already know and consolidate the learning they have done. I am a TA and have led lessons, but I am also my children's parent and I won't become their teacher because that just will lead to resentment or stress. I want the time to be as relaxed as possible, something that will not be looked back on as a time where it wasn't nice, it's bad enough that they have to be off, home and school are different places.

The Silly Games thread might offer some entertainment: fetcheveryone.com/viewtopic.php?id=60635

We'll be having duvet days, but also some more 'structured' times. There will be a balance to be found. Silly games would be good.

Good idea Purps. No kids myself but my French/German friend currently living in Colorado said this earlier in the week..

'I have started to organize our weeks without school. I made a schedule for the kids for the whole day with math, German and French, but also lots of reading, ukulele playing and fun.'

Love the ukeleles!

Purps - Exactly. Do not be the teacher.

Plenty of things that children can be educated about outside of the academic role. Stuff that actually as a teacher we have needed parents to do, because it cannot be done in the classroom setting. Now is the time to allow these to happen, guilt free and knowing they have value.

The kinds of things that are so called "soft skills" or "vocational", i.e. social/emotional/practical things are desperately valuable.

Creature, definitely. I had to show a year 4 how to tie their shoelaces yesterday, I suggested they learn to do that while off! I look forward to cross stitching with mine and drawing and dancing.

Thank you for setting up this thread Purps.

I would love to concentrate on quality time but my main worry is how I work from home and provide quality time.
