Brilliant! I don't think I've read that, but have read other stuff of his. *checks*. I've read Awaydays, which is also about his, erm, football 'supporting' experience iirc.

Good summary, Chris, of Utopia Avenue. I’m a big Mitchell fan and this fell below expectations.

Linds - no I haven't, thanks I must check that one out. I do go through a lot of books on fictional bands/musicians (Franzen - Freedom, Egan - Tales from the Goon Squad, Banks - Espedair Street, Keenan - This is Memorial Device), and none of them are ever quite right. And some are less right than others - (Franzen I'm looking at you, although it's hard to say what he got wrong, other than just it felt wrong). Just found this list to distract me even more: irishtimes.com |

I'm almost finished on Ubik by Philip K Dick as well, which I had to read as a digression from the High Weirdness book that I mentioned on here earlier , because they started describing the entire plot and I was like - I haven't read Ubik yet and don't want it spoiled! - and I couldn't really skip that section of the book either. Ubik started off very dusty and scaly (can't think of appropriate other adjective), but has turned into a compulsive page turner, despite some bad anachronism (slot machine controlled doors?) and has more realities within reality than a Christopher Nolan movie.

Some of the ones on that list look good.

Espedair Street really grated with me. Part of the problem is wish fulfilment shines through so badly in most of the books about rock/pop/other musicians written by people who aren't. If that makes sense.

Yes, Sharkie, it does to me. I don’t even remember a band or music much from Freedom? Wait, it’s starting to come back to me... more a solo artist who no longer did anything? |
