Think butterscotch tart would be similar to gyspy tart - just equal amount of butter and sugar, with some flour and milk whisked in. Was very tasty, but just means we have another 6 bits to eat...

Carrot cake is in the Aga

I have been involved in textiles for nearly 40 years and trained as a dyer in the East Midlands in the early 80’s. Dye formulations are called recipes and the dye store is often referred to as a colour kitchen. When dyeing the initial visual assessment of the colour achieved is the ‘first show’. I’ve adopted this for my baking. First show on my carrot cake is 7-20pm, or if you’re NE 19-20 hours

K made bread for the first time in absolutely ages. Based on a Bertinet baguette recipe but adapted with 60:35:5 white:wholemeal:rye, using a starter and retarded ferment.
Tasty, lovely and soft with a good crust.

Thank you! He said the slashes on the right hand loaf didn't work properly. The right loaf was on the top shelf, left loaf on the bottom shelf - shows how the temp varies in our oven. Both baked on bread stones (actually repurposed granite chopping boards £10 from Tesco!)
Really pleased he's getting into it again. Hoping he'll make the lemon and barley cob soon - delicious.

Nice oven spring MsG. You need a good sharp razor blade to get reliable slashes.

DT, what are you doing with all the cake? Or is that impolite?

We’re eating it. Following the lockdown I’m furloughed and the missus is working at home. She suggested we started having elevenses every day to give us structure at this odd time so we’ve been having coffee and cake daily. It’s her birthday tomorrow and the carrot cake is for then. The last fruit cake I made as gone in the cupboard ‘for emergencies’ ie if we run out of other cake. I’d never baked until three or four weeks ago so it’s something new for me to do too

A friend of mine used Christmas cake as fuel when training for likes of Haworth Hobble and the Fellsman. Another swears by a big block of marzipan as emergency food for when he’s on the hill. His thinking is he doesn’t actually like it very much so isn’t likely to just eat it when he’s feeling peckish, plus it keeps forever

jacdaw - DH does use a razor blade but this is the first bread he's done for probably five years so a bit out of practice with the "swipe/slash". I guess it'll come back with a few more tries :-)

Emergency cake is an excellent concept :-)
