Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

It might vary county-to-county but it's generally a beep test and requires a pretty low standard to get in.

Also, coincidentally, The Varied Not Random podcast just did an episode about fitness tests for First Responders int he USA: podcasts.apple.com

Their view was that most emergency services and armed forces initial fitness tests are a bit easy and pointless, and they suggested some alternatives.

It's an easy beep - yes. I'm told that before it was outlawed the young bucks used to do it backwards.

Is this also "Neil and Si's 'all exercise is good'" wire? Hope so, for I want to share something from my log:

Just one lane for lengths - the rest of the pool was given over to Aqua Aerobics which looked like tremendous fun.

Karen the instructor got everyone ("including you two swimming lengths") to sing along with the chorus of 'Love is in the air'. That was an hour ago. Still grinning.

I'm very much in agreement that all exercise is good (within reason) and variety is beneficial to overall health and fitness, although not in a specific targetted way (if you want to run fast you need to run lots and spending time on a rower won't help beyond a certain point).

I reckon if you're having fun and keeping your interest (and therefore participation) then its a good thing. My weight training is far from the most efficient way to build strength but if I did the sessions "by the book" I'd have given up long since, and I'm still making slow and steady progress.

I think I'd draw the line at singing "love is in the air", but whatever floats your pool noodle. ;-)
