Especially with newer climbers they get trashed quickly until good footwork is learned. There are some cheaper shoes made for kids though - have a look at the links on this page, especially the Mad Rock ones.

I generally just boulder at the moment but I think my friends would be happy for someone to join them if people on here are looking for climbing partners.
