We plan to climb at Kendal at some point during this weekend. Any other climbing Fetchies like to join us?

Although bizarrely the article links indoor climbing to an increase in mountaineering - different things, surely? Just like rock climbing and mountaineering are different things.

And the photo of someone bouldering right over JD's head is not really an example of safe practice, is it?!

Indoor climbing (especially indoor bouldering) and mountaineering could scarcely be more different.
I rather liked the image conjured up of indoor walls being a Wacky Warehouse for adults

Agreed V'rap! I do think they're like playgrounds though, that's why it's so fun!
I think you could link indoor climbing to mountaineering as you're more likely to meet people who are interested in mountain-type pursuits climbing than not. Or at least it seems that most climbers I've met love the mountains too.

I think they're two different, but overlapping, groups. Indoor climbing and cragging are very strongly linked, but mountaineering less so.
I'm on the committee of a mountaineering club, and you'd be surprised how many people either just climb indoors, or maybe also at single pitch crags but never venture on to anything much bigger. (I don't count summer hillwalking as mountaineering) They make up a sizeable proportion of the club - possibly even the majority.
That's fine, btw, I'm not having a go at those people and everybody's free to choose what they want to do with their time. But I wouldn't call them mountaineers (whatever the name of the club might be).

I like indoor bouldering.
I have no interest in outdoor climbing and hence do not think of myself as a mountaineer or even a climber.
Wacky Warehouse for grownups sums it up pretty well

I think you can think of yourself as a climber HJ - bouldering (even indoors) is just climbing on a smaller scale!
