Yes the kit can be a little pricey and it will take a while for your arms to get string (top tip, us your feet more than your arms). A lot of walls will hire kit so you may be able to try before committing to buying your own stuff

There are lots of books on the subject. I'd recommend giving them all a wide berth until you've actually done some hands-on climbing
