DuncanG, go for it it's great fun. Yes the kit can be a little pricey and it will take a while for your arms to get string (top tip, us your feet more than your arms).
A lot of walls will hire kit so you may be able to try before committing to buying your own stuff

And as far as "how easy" is concerned, for a fit young man it's a doddle to pick up but takes forever to master.
There are lots of books on the subject. I'd recommend giving them all a wide berth until you've actually done some hands-on climbing
