Pandemic is a really good co-op game and rightly popular. If your folks or others are new to co-ops, the most difficult thing to get across is the everyone wins or else everyone loses concept.

I don't know Sequence, but if that goes down well, you might look at Ingenious (designed by the wonderful Reiner Knizia) which is also pretty abstract or maybe Alhambra (Dirk Henn) which is really nicely themed. Although it's getting on a bit now, Alhambra stands up well against newer games and it's firmly in my top ten for family play. It's a nice mix of tile laying and city building with various constraints to keep the brain occupied.

And as for the question about Ticket to Ride, there are many good standalone games and/or expansions set in the TtR world. For example, if you are buying for a couple that often play two-person games, then Switzerland or Nordic Countries would offer a tighter experience than the base USA game.

All the maps have their own idiosyncracies. Ftrobbie who posts here would seem to know the whole range as well as anyone, so if you have a recipient with particular characteristics/likes, he might be able to make a recommendation.

Wow just re-found this thread... I posted back on first page. Having had a read through I thought I would post what myself and Mrs FP are playing:

Wingspan: Love this game, a great engine building game. Most games of this are pretty close.

Brass: Either Lancashire or Birmingham - Probably joint top of the list of my current games. Strategy needs to be adaptable as other players change the game as they play. Works with 2 very well..... even better with more!

Great Western Trail: Slightly tricky to learn... but the feel of the game is awesome. Again works with 2... better with more.

Azul, Photosynthesis and Viticulture all been played.

Scythe: Got all the expansions and it is a beast of a game. Son can wipe the floor with me, Mrs FP tolerates it but gets frustrated as she feels that she can never compete.

Not seen a mention for Segrada: I would class this in the Azul type of game... but more complex... if you like Suduko then this is a must play... it has rules for adding coloured dice into a grid, cannot have number or colour next to each other. Can get mindbending

Robo-Rally: I have the old version of this... must dust it off.. end up doing alittle seated shuffle dance as I program my bot

Still to play - Terraforming Mars: I played this once at a gamecon... now just need to remember the rules enough to get it going. about 6 weeks of home time to work it out I guess!

In terms of favourite boardgames which are quite straightforward one of my favourites is Hare and Tortoise (by Gibsons - no 'the' in the title) but probably needs 4 people to make it work well.

A nice family co-op game is Flashpoint - all play as firefighters trying to put out a house fire. Simple rules to get started... expansions to beef it up if needed. Hard to win once the whole place is ablaze tho!

I have been meaning to say that this is *the* week for a game of 1960: The Making of the President.

It is a fantastic game and we play it every couple of years. No matter that it is Nixon vs Kennedy, it might as well be this year's candidates and it taught me quite a lot of what I know about the US election system!

The only co-op game we have is Burgle Bros - which we enjoy playing but can be a bit complicated. The idea is to start on the ground floor of a building and work your way up to the roof, emptying safes on the way - the first time we played it we mis-read the instructions and didn't include any stairs. We didn't get very far!

One that’s been a eviler favourite in my store with “silver gamers” is Qwirkle, bit of a cross between Scrabble and Dominoes, might be worth a look.
