Read it.

British Gymnastics has a very long history of bullying people into early specialisation and very early competition that Athleics doesn't have in the same way, bar a few exceptions, but well worth looking out for and UKA rightly highlight how ever ham-fistedly they did it.

By biggest grievance about the changes on the recent courses I attended were that they were aimed squarely at coaches of younger people. I haven't Coached anyone under 18 in over 12 years. Neither had half the attendees on the course I was on, which the presenters roundly ignored that fact and ploughed on with their script.

Remember the vast majority of runners are older people and UKA would do very well to remember that as that, for good or bad is the bread and butter.

I agree with the numbers however, I would argue that as coaches and leaders we have a duty of care for all whom we coach and / or lead in groups. There are some additional specifics that you need to consider when working with anyone who is under 18 or, who is classified as a vulnerable adult, however your coach and / or leaders license provides insurance for coaches / leaders working with athletes under the age of 18 so it is important that all coaches / leaders know the specifics of working with u18's etc.

The only other way is for UKA/EA etc. to introduce a new coach / leader pathway for working with over 18's etc. and I am sure the wider coaching, athletics / running clubs would not want to have to pay for two coaching qualifications if / when a coach or leader works with both u18 and over18 athletes.

I think I was arguing for that too. I also think UKA takes coaches and adult runners pretty much for granted.

It wouldn't hurt to have one or two case studies in the safe-guarding course that looked at vulnerable adults - even clearly defining what is meant by the term. We have one neuro-divergent young man and broadly everyone is very supportive, but he can come across as rude or insensitive and that has at times caused issues.

I do also think that if UKA re going to insist on emergency first aid before they will insure you leading runs on the road, then they should offer to facilitate courses - it's a bit lazy to rely on people having work related certificates (and excludes non-employed coaches/run leaders).

(stocks head around door)
just a question - if you wanted to learn more about coaching and planning training and target races etc but for yourself not wanting to get a qualification where would you look?
I was looking at the EA run leader course but it requires you to do videoed coached sessions with a qualified coach which implies you have to be attached to a in person club. I'm a FERC member because I can't get to a club.
But I am really interested in learning more about the whole fitness planning side of things to self coach
ATM if I am doing a long race (eg Chester next month) I just run longer!! I don't tend to do anything other than run commute and long runs - it's only recently that I have started doing "speed work" with the virtual mile and twice a 5k time trial.
thanks

@EvilPixie - there are no specific resources freely available from UKA/EA. That said, there are a ton of webinars / video content at Athletics Hub (https://www.athleticshub.co.uk/videofeed-endurance) and another good place to look is the Brian Mac website (https://www.brianmac.co.uk/). It contains some good information in an easy to digest format.

Other than that; there are a few good books out; The Science of Running (Steve Magness) is my 'go to' book on endurance development. Another one of my favourites is Athletic Development (Vern Gambetta) is a fantastic resource on functional movement conditioning.

I am sure fellow Fetchies will add to the list!

Sorry clever people another more specific question
I tend to just run (this is why I am interested in learning more!) and was wondering about pace.

I noticed today that my 4m easy run (14.37) was only 4s per mile faster than Sunday's long run (14.41) which seems wrong!

Project joker has told me (from a couple of months ago)
LSR 14.49
Threshold 12.58
Intervals 2mins57 to cover 400metres or 6.10 to cover 800metres (so 12.20 pace?)

so how do I work out what pace I "should" be running at? I am very lazy and just run as it feels so very rarely put in any effort hence a one paced pony!

I thought that after my next race (Chester metric marathon in Oct) that I would try to make a bit more of an effort and start to look at getting close to my PBs from 10-13yrs ago!

Thanks a lot - hope this is an OK place to ask these questions

EP - absolutely fine to ask here! Personally I think long run & easy pace can be very similar - although for me it might depend a bit on how long the long run is! I prefer to work within a range. You might find using perceived effort easier to work with - particularly for intervals. Broadly work as hard as you can for the amount of time involved - you shouldn't be able to get more than a couple of words out whereas easy pace should be conversational.

Thank you AL

Sunday my long run was 15m so much longer than todays run!
I’ve never really got on with perceived effort as I tend to overthink! Maybe that’s what I am doing anyway?!
I try to do that last mile home faster thanks to a comment by you last year!
I think I’m just too comfortable running at one pace.

I’ve been trying to do the virtual 1m and 5k to get out of my comfort zone
