Runtogether had started to work very well, one of my local clubs has 6 to 8 groups pencilled in each week, according to the runners expected pace, each with a route or meeting place added, an awful lot of overhead for the co-ordinating coach.

With me, we have two set meeting places, groups of 12, people make their way to the meeting place separately, the split off when we are finished. Track is covid secure, we take ourselves off to a quieter section, warm up, stick to 1 lane, keep separate, not ideal but good enough.

Anyone else a bit pissed off with EA? I find the idea that we cannot even have very small groups very odd. The actual risk of contracting Covid in a small group of responsible adults, who keep there distance and then go their separate ways is as minimal as it gets. The virus is passed indoors. I have had no problems, people who have had symptoms kept well away, that is a MUST (this is my student groups, covid was rife 6 weeks ago).

I think I just about understand where they are coming from, but EA sound like this too me, blah, blah, blah, mental health, blah, blah, do all we can, oh oh, ok you elites you're ok, carry on, the rest of you, shut up shop. I can only assume EA thought their rules weren't good enough, and besides now that there is nowhere to go for organised training I have already seen a number of groups meeting, plainly not abiding by any rules whatsoever, an organised, supervised session is much better in terms of safety, a retrograde step as far as I can see.

I do think they have been slow to update guidance, and I thought their 'go ahead in groups as large as you like, but that shouldn't be more than 12" was unhelpful for those of us in high infection areas.

There was a point, 21st of October where the advice was pretty confusing and you had to look very deep into the documentation to find 12.

The DCMS had groups of 6 on their website until Friday!

I think they are keeping their noses clean rather than supporting anyone.

WS, I don't like sticking up for EA as they're useless for road runners/clubs, but I don't think it was their fault. Even if they were lobbying (I don't know if they were or not), probably every other sport was lobbying too, so I think the government just said "no exceptions". In my own case I was really hoping (even expecting, possibly) that gyms would remain open, but no chance.

I think it's interesting that a lot of clubs acted in cancelling their sessions before EA even made their official announcement, showing that they (EA) are so poor/slow at their comms.

Ideas for a COVID secure Christmas session?

My group’s traditional pre-Christmas session is a run around town, with Santa hats on, looking at all the lights on people’s houses. Then we go to a pub about 2 miles from town then jog back.

That won’t happen this year...

Any fun ideas?

I’ve come up with a sprout and spoon race: random teams of 4, race 3200m (which is an aggregate 2 laps each), but you can split it any way you like between your team.

I did a 12 days of Xmas mixed session last year. Short reps on a car park mixed with various strength exercises or drills. This year we are doing a Christmas tree pyramid session - with hats.

Just been informed by my fellow author that our 'co-authored' article on 'Push / Pull Coaching' has been published on Fast Running. Quite pleased (despite the missing 't') with the content. Matt and myself have been going back-and-forth with this over the last month discussing this in great detail, so it's great to see finally it posted on the internet.

It's worth a read if you're a little bored, or cannot get to sleep at night!
