Have fmailed my answer to John, but as it's long-winded, the short, sweet summary is "YES, we're here to MOTIVATE"

I have to say that motivate is the key word here. Will post all long-winded answers on here at lunchtime. |

And I think another key bit is 'walking as training' ie M4P is going out on a deliberate training session. It's not walking to work or odding about the shops, it is training. Personally, I don't log walking to work or walking as part of my job - I probably do about 5 miles a day but that's work and not training - it's not done at a training pace. I log hillwalking but that's cross training for me and it's more of a diary of where we've been, how much ascent etc But walking as a training session needs to be logged as such. Clearly this is a personal issue but I am not going to get uppity because someone else on this site logs something differently to me - I want to share in others' successes (the point of this thread I hoped) and we must all be doing different sorts of speeds and have different aspirations. If someone has a goal and is aiming for that, that to me is the important bit, whether it's to do their first run/walk, their first ultra, or first mile walking on their hands balancing a cup of tea on their feet ![]() ![]() |

Ok - a poll will be created in the next hour. Sorry that this has gone on a bit - I find the difference in opinions very interesting. I'll post a link to the poll when I've got my lunch. Just to reiterate that I'm not injured (just incredibly slow) and this is for m4p. Here are all answers for information: |

Of course, that seems perfectly reasonable to me if it is being done as training I suppose any activity that is included needs to have some sort of 'training affect'. I'm not sure, but does the heartrate have to reach a certain level before this occurs ? Run walk certainly is certainly included in running and I included run/walks last year when I started back. My first few sessions were walk 4min30s run 30s x 6 and increased the running 30s each week. My runs this year include a proportion of walking as I always walk 2-3mins to start and end. However out and out walking....just walking?!? Iif in your total you made it clear how much was running and walking it would be good with me. After all the idea of the target is to motivate us to keep us fit and healthy; the walking will help the first bit but running too early after an injury will not keep you healthy This is just for motivation as far as Im concerned so I can't see any reason that M4P shouldn't log walking miles if she wants to. Well if it's me about ME, if i aint running i aint training! I don't see a problem with that personally. If she were run/walking they would be included automatically. I think the fact that they don't get counted when you put walking down as X-training is a safeguard for those that do a lot of hill walking or routinely walk 2-4 miles a day to/from work/station etc. If she is counting it as a training session towards your running, then I'd add them in. After all, the aim of the thread is "motivation". There is no point in having a motivating goal, if you're going to injure yourself/delay return to fitness by running before you can walk so to speak, and if that goal is there there hanging over you and getting out of reach, it may have the opposite effect, and none of us want that. Did I see your name down for Reading? If you are, let me know your number and I'll keep an eye open for you! VERY BIG THANK YOU for organising the fleeces I think that is totally fine - the idea is to encourage people to train but there is a risk that it could push people to train too much with an injury - walking as training should definately be allowed. Yes, I think so I think you can include it, matey - it'll just take a little longer to get there! There's a great book about running using the Alexander Technique, to avoid injury - it sorted my knees out a treat. Can't remember the title, but just put running and alexander technique into Amazon and it'll come up I think you can include your walking miles if you are using them as part of your training - training's training whatever form it takes!! I of course say yes, but then it's me who is asking!!! I think its up to them. Its not a competition - the whole idea is to provide motivation for the individual. I do not include walking miles - if I include walking as cross training I make a note of the miles in the notes not in the distance box. I want to actually run 500+ miles in 2008. However in the same situation as mad4purple I might well include walking to give myself an achievable target. I would like that too - my foot is too sore to run and upping the milage is hurting. Maybe we can split out running/walking miles? I would say yes as long as its not a plodding slow walk. Does that make sense? |

The poll will be the end of it and yes it os up to M4P but I wanted to get everyone involved. Maybe that was 'using a sledgehammer to crack a nut' in retrospect. |
