This is very interesting - I'm seriously thinking about trying Gobi's plan at Oakley. The only thing is - should I risk it just three weeks before VLM? After all, it IS the longest marathon after all ...... (sorry Lord Fetch, I know you said you'd officially retired that joke but - well - it just won't lie down and die .....)
But, srsly, would you advise this strategy three weeks before your marathon? I'm inclined to think it would be OK - I'm following the P&D schedule again, and there's plenty of speedier stuff in there

I also followed Gobi's plan today and was happy with the result. Although I finished behind quite a few of my fellow club runners who I would normally hope to beat at halfs or maras it seemed sensible to me to just take this easy - the first half especially.
Target mara pace is 7.25. Progressively getting faster every five, with the last 5 at target pace. Felt good storming past folk in the last five and some really nice chats with others in the first 10 miles! Finish time of 2.38.
8:28 8:18 8:20 8:05 8:22
8:21 8:10 8:07 8:08 7:55
7:44 7:44 7:35 7:47 7:45
7:19 7:22 7:22 7:17 7:36 34
I'm 8 weeks away from my mara Schnecke - don't think I'd do this 3 weeks before.

I've properly raced a marathon 3 weeks before properly racing a marathon and PB'd both.
It's not a tactic I'd endorse, though. It could probably be argued that I'd have PB'd the second marathon by a lot more if I hadn't reaced the first.
I am planning on following Gobi's scedule in Hull, though, which is 3 weeks before my A race marathon, in Hull.

I tried 5m taking it easy, 5m pushing a bit harder, 5m easy again and then planned to push on for the last 5 only if I felt I had enough left. Miles 1-15 went fine, but last 3, in particular, were quite draining. Wish I had started even slower (which in my case is very slow) and then progressively increased speed as per Gobi's plan.

The question for me is now whether to do another 20mi race a week on Sun, doing something similar to the plan, but will more MP - something like 5easy, 5MP, 5 steady, 5MP or more preferably, 5easy, 3fairly steady, 3 steady, 9MP. +2mi jog warm down in either case.
If I don't do the race, I'll be doing 22 anyway.
What do people think?

What did you do in the end rf fozzy?
Thank you to those who initiated and congributed to this thread, I put the plan into action at Ashby 20 today - and I found it just as hard to reign myself in and run the first 5 slowly as it was to do the last 5!
Splits were:
8:56, 8:58, 8:48, 8:45, 8:54 8:40, 8:44, 8:44, 8:37, 8:33 8:29, 8:12, 8:19, 8:23, 8:19 7:49, 7:51, 7:59, 7:57, 7:21, 0:31 (6:40 pace)
I had planned for my pmp to be 8:00-8:10mm as I am aiming for a low-3:30's marathon, but genuinly couldn't have done the first few miles any slower - it felt comfortable right through to the last few pmp miles. The race had quite a lot of ups n downs which affected my pace - the miles where I was quite a bit quicker than the pace should have been were downhill sections where I just relaxed and went with it. HR stats v pleasing too, so I am now thinking that perhaps I should be pushing for a sub-3:30.
The best thing was passing LOADS of people on the 2nd lap (was a 2 lap race) - I wasn't passed by anybody
Thanks again, I will definitely use this approach in future.

I had the same experience at Trimpell the other week Clare - no-one passed me after 3miles and I spent the rest of the race passing everyone else (including a satisfying pass of someone I know at the 16mi mark ) - it's a great feeling and am hoping that if I pace my marathon right, the same thing will be happening for the final third!
I know what you mean about the first 5mi - I found an ex-clubmate who was running at 8m/m, and chatted to him to slow me down!
In the end today, I did a HM as a practise race (instead of doing 13@MP) - and was very pleased with my result on tired legs after a 70+mi week.
I did repeat the above session (the now-called 20mile Gobi-quartered progressive race approach) on tuesday night with a clubmate on a much more undulating route and found it a bit more difficult in training than in a race, but we did push the last 5mi a little bit faster than planned.
