3) - 5m - 38:34(7:43/m) - 710cal

4) - 4m - 28:44(7:11/m) - 565cal

5) - 1.07m - 7:02(6:36/m) - 149cal

you got carried away??

My plan had been for a nice progressive 20 at Oakley to leave myself in good shape for VLM.

However it was pointed out to me last night that I have 3 marathons in 3 days the weekend following Oakley, and that there's probably little point in saving myself at Oakley. I can kinda see the point. So I might as well race Oakley after all!

I was reading Daniels' Running Formula 2nd ed last night. He advocates on p37 (and again in Chapter 6) that any marathon paced sessions in training (including marathon build-up) should be no longer than 90mins or 16miles (whichever is the lesser), but does say that 20mile/2hr training run, finishing at MP is also a good idea.

I didn't look at the P&D schedules in detail when I read that the other week, but I'm pretty sure that the longest MP run they advocated was 20 with 14 at MP. Can anyone jog my memory/confirm this?

The bottom line is that unless the 20miler is your "A" race, then you shouldn't race it!

I've been lurking on this thread, Ive been told my long runs are too fast so I wanted to try Gobi's plan. My current marathon time is 4.19 and I think I could go a bit quicker? I've done my long run today and it hurt!!!! I got confused with my Gel routine, should I have stuck to my usual routine? where I started slow I didnt feel I needed one so didnt have my first till 1hr 30ish?

Is it supposed to have hurt as much as it did? All my other long runs I've done the opposite way round. It just felt an awful lot harder than usual?

Sometimes you just have a bad run. Better to get it over and done with in the training. Hopefully you have learned from this run and won't repeat the mistakes on race day.

About This Thread

Maintained by rf_fozzy
I'm interested in what people think about them - do you do them? How do you run them

Advice from Gobi:

5 miles @ MP + 60-90( time to get loose so start close to 90 and work down)
5 miles @ MP + 45-60
5 miles @ MP + 30-45
4 miles @ MP
1 mile however you like
1 mile cool down

The 1 mile cool down came into force as I discovered coaching nobody wants to back off at 19miles and look like they have blown up so we invented the go race the last mile and then do a cool down rule
