Oh, and very well run! I agree with Johnny, you've definitely got a sub-3.30 in you!

thanks folks :-) today my legs feel fine, no doms at all! unfortunately circumstances have meant i couldn't get out to run with club this eve (hubby working late) so have had a forced rest day, but hoping to get back into training tomorrow. had i raced yesterday properly i suspect my legs wouldn't be so forgiving!

i did get a few comments / surprised reactions from a couple of club mates yest who expected me to run the race faster / get a pb, but am trying not to let that concern me - some of them ran fab fast times and yes it would have been a boost, but i dont think my recovery would have been enough and everyone is different.

Clare - as my coach said to me, "why would you want to race a 20miler in your marathon build-up? It's a distance that no-one cares about and there's a very good chance you'll knacker yourself or leave your best race on the road 5, 6, 7 weeks out? You should recover ok, but why take the chance?"

If you do the day for every mile rule, that's nearly 3 weeks of training at the most crucial time! It only took me about 4 days to recover properly from Trimpell, so I was able to repeat the session last week in training.

I don't understand why people feel the need to run 20 miles at MP before the marathon anyway. 13 miles at MP should be sufficient, because MP should be comfortable for 20miles anyway, as everyone says it's the last 10km where it gets hard.

yup, i agree fozzy and thanks for voicing what i think / agree with. but it's easy to have doubts when people around u are running up to 10 mins faster when they have the same mara time goal!

Yeah I know, Clare. You just have to have the confidence that (a) you've definitely not left your best race on the road and your clubmates/rivals may well have done and (b) that the quality training you can put in over the next 2 weeks whilst they're all recovering will make a difference. I stand by my conviction that running 10mins faster on a 20mile race in your build-up won't have the same effect.

By the way, a rest day today is not the worst thing in my opinion! Means you can start the harder sessions again tomorrow!

Totally agree, race and train smart with intelligence. My view, FWIW, clare is that you're honing and sharpening your body to perform at its best at the target race.

I know I am slower than you lot, but just to add - I have seen a lot of different runners of different levels train for Marathons. It seems to be a fact that people who do a "fast" 20 miler, or several fast 20 milers in training don't seem to be able to hit their desired pace on Marathon day, crash and burn.

Those that dtheir 20 milers slow or a mixture of slow + building to MP sections fare far better on the day. It is VERY hard to have that pace discipline when all around you have not. "I can't run slow" is not an excuse. I get people at the club ask "why are you running with our group" ...er because I don't want to kill myself on my easy sessions??!? I did sell my soul to Gobi some time ago... I do truly believe everything he says is right, or at least it works for me.

Clare I think you will kick their a$$es on Marathon day.

thanks for the reassurances. i would never wish anybody to have a bad marathon and everybody recovers differently - i just began to wonder if i didn't work hard enough, especially as i have no doms today!!

About This Thread

I'm interested in what people think about them - do you do them? How do you run them

Advice from Gobi:

5 miles @ MP + 60-90( time to get loose so start close to 90 and work down)
5 miles @ MP + 45-60
5 miles @ MP + 30-45
4 miles @ MP
1 mile however you like
1 mile cool down

The 1 mile cool down came into force as I discovered coaching nobody wants to back off at 19miles and look like they have blown up so we invented the go race the last mile and then do a cool down rule
