Okay, it's time for the somewhat delayed round-up. Can't believe we've reached the end of another month already and there's only 3 months of the year left.
My running club organises an annual event called the Welsh Castles Relay, which starts at Caernarfon Castle and finishes at Cardiff Castle, so the theme of this month's round up is Welsh castles, and focuses on a few of the castles the race passes.
Caernarfon Castle
Caernarfon Castle is a medieval fortress in Caernarfon, Gwynedd. There was a motte-and-bailey castle in the town of Caernarfon from the late 11th century until 1283 when King Edward 1 of England began replacing it with the current stone structure. The Edwardian town and castle acted as the administrative centre of north Wales and as a result the defences were built on a grand scale. Despite Caernarfon Castle's external appearance of being mostly complete, the interior buildings no longer survive and many of the building plans were never finished. Caernarfon Castle was neglected until the 19th century when the state funded repairs. In 1911, Caernarfon Castle was used for the investiture of the Prince of Wales and again in 1969.

Harlech Castle
Harlech Castle, located in Gwynedd, Wales, is a medieval fortification, constructed atop a spur of rock close to the Irish Sea. It was built by Edward I during his invasion of Wales between 1282 and 1289. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars. It fell to Owain Glyndŵr in 1404 and became Glyndŵr's residence and military headquarters for the remainder of the uprising until being recaptured by English forces in 1409. During the 15th century Wars of the Roses, Harlech was held by the Lancastrians for seven years, before Yorkist troops forced its surrender in 1468, a siege memorialised in the song, Men of Harlech.

Caerphilly Castle
Caerphilly Castle is a medieval fortification in Caerphilly, South Wales. The castle was constructed by Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century as part of his campaign to conquer Glamorgan, and saw extensive fighting between Gilbert and his descendants and the native Welsh rulers. Surrounded by extensive artificial lakes, it occupies around 30 acres and is the second largest castle in Britain. It is famous for having introduced concentric castle defences to Britain and for its large gatehouses.

Castell Coch
Castell Coch (Welsh for Red Castle) is a 19th-century Gothic Revival castle built above the village of Tongwynlais in South Wales. A stronghold with Norman origins, refortified in the thirteenth century, it was destroyed in the fourteenth century. The castle ruins were acquired by the Stuart family in the 18th century, and in 1848, when John Crichton-Stuart, the 3rd Marquess of Bute, inherited the castle, he employed the architect William Burges to reconstruct the castle as a summer residence, using the medieval remains as a basis for the design.

Cardiff Castle
Cardiff Castle is a medieval castle and Victorian Gothic revival mansion located in the city centre of Cardiff. The original motte and bailey castle was built in the late 11th century by Norman invaders on top of a 3rd-century Roman fort. Cardiff Castle was repeatedly involved in the conflicts between the Anglo-Normans and the Welsh, being attacked several times in the 12th century, and stormed in 1404 during the revolt of Owain Glyndŵr.
