Also a measured and well thought-out opinion. Thank you.

Thanks for the thoughts and comments.

I completely agree with Becca about the availability and price of ethical animal products, which is why on a practical, day to day basis I eat vegetarian. If the choice is cheap meat or no meat, or if the ethical option is beyond my low income budget then I go without and eat beans and lentils :-)

I also agree that a healthy, balanced vegetarian diet is easily possible. Vegan is more of an issue for me, as the only sources of vit B12 for vegans are via supplementation or fortification (using micro-organisms) and I prefer to eat 'real' food. The fact that we can't get an essential vitamin from non-animal foods says to me that we haven't evolved into a plant-based organism just yet.

Nipping in to agree that Becca's post is also well thought out and expressed.

It's certainly true that unless you buy really local (or be your own hunter gatherer!) then the 'backstory' of a lot of animal food is difficult to determine. We try to buy local fish - but I bet I've been caught out with that Scottish thing. And I eat tinned tuna so am certainly no saint.

Interesting and well thought out posts from all sides.

I would just say that I'm not convinced that we are "evolved" as such to not need meat. Evolution is very slow in creatures with a long life span i.e. humans. It simply does not move that quickly.
I agree that we have "cognitively evolved" as it were by increasing our knowledge and education to a state where we can happily follow a diet that allows vegetarianism or veganism to be healthy and fulfilling. _But_ it does require more effort/education to ensure we do not miss out when we cut out elements of our diet. Don't want to get too technical here, but there are several things we cannot create within the body that must be consumed. Animal products are often "more complete" sources for these things, which makes consuming them the easier choice for most people.
Those here are likely to have considered well what the implications and requirements are for their nutrition. Not everyone does, which is why I will not advocate it for someone else. I would support them in their choice once they have made it though, if that makes sense.
My parents are vegetarian and I have lived that lifestyle with them when I share their house. Indeed when I visit, I still largely do.

I do like the key of awareness. Being able to understand what we do, our motivations and subject them to a level of scrutiny is good. It forces us to constantly evaluate the validity of our choices and ensure we are comfortable with them, now and into the future.

Thanks all. Good reading to be had here. Look forward to more. :-)

Its good that my points have been taken in the good nature in which they were intended.

I would question whether we "need" meat. The human body has more in common with natural herbivores than carnivores if you look at intestine length, stomach acidity, saliva, claws and teeth. We can eat meat but that does not mean that we must.

Vegans are often patronised in terms of nutrition but in my experience most have good awareness of dietary requirements and won't struggle to reach 10 a day. The need to supplement is not exclusively a vegan thing, either. Lots of carnivores still need to supplement with B12, Vit D, iron etc.

Theses are all valid observations and viewpoints from Kinky, becca and RIC, I think it is the up to individuals to see how they fit with their consciences and beliefs.
