[I know this as I have both the original 2314 word list and the new 2309 word list in a spreadsheet ] Wow. A quick google search shows there are 158000 5 letter words so that’s less than 2 per cent that are current answers. Seems more controversial to delete at least one entirely from even being a valid word rather than just not an answer.

There are more words which are valid guesses, though not 158,000 of them.

I guess the author pruned it down to the most used words somehow so we didn't end up with too many obscure ones.

(Though 158,000 sounds a lot! There'll be quite a lot of pretty obscure and unused ones in that list. This article suggests there are 171,000 or so total words in the OED - englishlive.ef.com )

Seems the numbers differ vastly, and I mean vastly

According to Free Dictionary, there are 158,390 words with five letters. Volume 6 of Office's Scrabble Dictionary claims there are 8,996 available words with five letters while other sources claim that there are only 5,350 words that you can create with five letters in word games.

When I refreshed the page I had saved it took me to the NYT site. I presume that it would have stayed on the old site until I did that, or closed down my phone or something else that refreshed it.
