They've definitely done something with the wordlist.

At one point in yesterday's CYNIC, my letters combo took me to guess LYNCH. The NYT said lynch wasn't a valid word.

I’ve had more 4 or 5 scores in the last few days but I think it’s just that a few less guessable words have happened to crop up.

There was an article posted a few days ago that said the NYT had got rid of a few words from the list of answers/valid guesses that they deemed controversial.

What Dio said. I was struggling (unsurprisingly) with that word and husband was baffled by the letters I had because he’d already done it on the other site. He looked it up and they’ve taken some words out of the list, as Frag says.

There's only 5 words changed from the original list, a few over the next few days. Other than those, all the words are the same as on the original site. However, this does make sense of those who are saying today's word is odd if you're playing the original site rather than the NYT version.
