I agree - there is a member of my family that has a Cocker Spaniel crossed with a Poodle. They insist on calling it a Cocker Poo I call it a cross-breed - as is Wanda, the difference being they know what was crossed with what because they got it from a 'specialist Cocker Poo breeder' and we only know for sure that Wanda is Staffie and *something* (possibly whippet-y/lurcher-y) because we got her from Battersea ;-)

I'd call it a mongrel and be dashed!

*wonders if mongrel is now a bit of a sweary dairy word?*

The whole ..... Poo thing is IMHO just being 'hipster' , I say cross breed too. I think mongrel is ok to say about a dog but not about a person.

There's plenty of jumping on the bandwagon with the poos but the logic behind crossing with a poodle is to reduce hair shedding. We've got friends with a cockerpoo who got it for the spaniel personality but not triggering a family member's allergy

Indeed TR my relative has it for the non-shedding too. But it's still a cross breed..... I do find it outrageous the sums of money some of these 'breeders' charge for these mixed breeds too. I have nothing against cross breed dogs at all and indeed a lot do not have the health issues of many pedigree dogs but at the end of the day it seems wrong to me that a 'mixture' can cost more money than a pedigree dog

Alice the Camel
We got Charlie after months of research as MrAtC and both kids are allergic to animal fur. Charlie doesn't bother them at all. Hurrah! I am shocked how much pets cost full stop - pedigree or mutt. For us, Charlie is worth every penny that we might have spent on a pedigree. He is cute with a lovely gentle personality, quite intelligent and lots of fun. Who could ask for more?
We won't be allowed to show him at Crufts but then we probably wouldn't want to anyway ;-)

And I guess you are spot on there Alice... pedigree or mutt people who sell dogs know that they are worth every penny of it to their owners and price them accordingly.

I wouldn't sell Wanda for all the money in the world... but then nobody else in their right mind would want to offer me all the money in the world for her ;-) so that's all right then :-)

I think there is a difference between 2 breeds that have been deliberately crossed, like Charlie, and the random cross breeding that can happen.

Jess isn't a pedigree anything. I wonder if it was a bashful bullmastiff that got caught by a bouncy boxer, or a boxer that was strolling down the road when a burly bullmastiff (handsome beast he would have been) gave her the eye, came on with the chat and had his way with her. Or maybe it was planned by their owners. Whichever scenario, Jess is a mongrel, not a buller or boxmastiff :-p

That does sound a lovely combination though GM. I adore boxers and we did have a bull mastiff in our family some years ago too. But I'd have to go for that combination being specifically bred... from gene lines that had already had the most slobbery ones bred out.... ;-)
