Hello. May I join the thread? We adopted Biscuit, our two year old lurcher with reactivity issues about four months ago.
Yesterday he did parkrun, saw lots of dogs, some coming towards us on a lead, and didn't react once heart
Today, I took him for a run/walk. Not a success. He was reactive, really snarled at one dog and the owner had a go at me for not having a muzzle on him (trainer says not to as it would make him worse), then reacted really badly again to the next dog (in a driveway so I hadn't seen it in time to cross the road). Both resulted in dragging him onwards by the harness. Then growled at a bicycle when we were yards from our front door.

That's an upsetting experience Carp but unfortunately (from what I've heard from other owners of potentially reactive dogs) their progress isn't linear and setbacks happen.
I wonder if he used up a lot of his 'coping skills' yesterday and was just too tired today?

Whatever, don't be too downhearted, pretty much all of us on this thread have had tricky experiences with our dogs, and you're doing really well.

Exactly what Daisy says, Carp. Please don't be too downhearted - you've made great progress with Biscuit and Saturday's success needs to be uppermost in your thoughts. xxx

I completely agree with LD - on the using up coping skills, especially if it was a busy parkrun (I wasn't at AW yesterday so missed you if it was there but am RD the next two Saturdays so you'd be most welcome with Biscuit). As you know - I think - I'm a big fan of muzzles, we have found that it doesn't make a great deal of difference to how Wanda behaves - she'll still lunge/bark/somersault/growl as much as she wants to with or without it but it makes a huge difference to how other people react to us - dogs are put on leads, taken away from us, cross the road and so on.

A muzzle gives the 'please put your dog on a lead, mine needs space' message better than anything else we have ever seen. Wanda isn't bothered by wearing it and genuinely is no better/worse in her behaviour for wearing it but we are far more confident walking her and I think she also picks up on the fact that we are not worrying so much. Some days she will walk and ignore every other dog she sees or better still politely greet them and then we have days like today where she is a complete monster and we look like the worst owners in the world - and that's where the hi-viz muzzle is a godsend because people do actually make an effort to keep their dogs out of her way!

You have done great with Biscuit so far and if ever the words 'it's a marathon not a sprint' were appropriate it's with helping a rescue dog adjust to the world (ours has so far been an 8 year marathon and we still can't see the finish line but don't let that put you off!!) Come for a (canine socially distanced) walk with me and Wanda round the reservoir/in Chantry Park some time if you want - it might do both of them some good and they might even make friends and help each other!

Does anyone have a bike trailer to put the dog in?

No, but we have often wondered about getting one although the thought of Wanda leaping out to chase a cat or a bird is so terrifying we probably are unlikely to do so. would be interested to hear about them though.

We have one RR, but don’t use it. It seemed like a good idea when Charlie was a pup, so we could all go for a bike ride together.
We didn’t get on with it - there’s no suspension so it bounces around quite a bit. It’s ok on proper roads/cycle paths but a bit wide for some of the paths we wanted to go on ( eg canal towpath).
Charlie has outgrown it now, it’s just sat in the garage.

We had our dog in the canoe. As we approached shore she jumped out to chase the ducks. Was a bit surprised she couldn't run in the water. Didn't jump out after that! :-) G
