We were meant to be meeting our puppy for the first time tomorrow (not a lockdown decision as were planning on getting one already). Had to cancel while I wait for my covid test result so a bit gutted we cant go.
It is our first puppy, but both have had family dogs (and I loved with my partners parents for a year who have a dog and I did most of the walks with it in that time) so know its something we can manage. But any tips for first time puppy owners that I wouldnt read in one of the books I'm reading?

Limitless patience needed when you start lead walking - you have to stop and wait for them to stop pulling on the lead before you move on. I used to think we would never get as far as the field (less than a quarter of a mile from home) because it took so long!!

I second LD plus decide what behaviours are important to you and never give in....... make sure everyone in the house agrees so that you can be consistent.
Tell us about the pup; what breed, boy/girl... colour etc etc and promise to keep us updated with lots of photos

Yeah, the lead training is going to be my area as I'll be the main walker. I think I'm a bit firmer and will stick to things more than my partner, so I'm trying to prep her for having to stick to the rules.
Black, male cocker. Has a white chin currently. He isnt quite 4 weeks old yet. There will be plenty of photos, dont worry. The wait for him to be able to come home seems to be taking forever at the moment.

Oh man I love black cockers. Really looking forward to pics.
As others say start as you mean to go on. Get the pup used to being on its own during the day for short periods. By which I mean in another room/in a crate. We had a helluva time with Ernie which meant the ‘no dog upstairs’ rule was abandoned early on. He still likes to be in the same room as me and he’s 4 now.
